Victoria Gitman at Garth Greenan Gallery
Vintage fur handbags by Victoria Gitman amaze with their abundant color and detail at Garth Greenan Gallery in Chelsea. With the contours of the purses cropped, Gitman’s arrangements resemble color field painting or Peruvian feather work. (On view through Feb 17th) Victoria Gitman, Untitled, oil on board, 6 ¼ x 8 inches, 2017.

“Conspicuous Femininity” and the Art of Victoria Gitman by Erich Kessel
“These paintings of bags and jewels simultaneously critique the expectations inherent in the act of looking at fine painting. Where painting is often used to venerate certain subjects—often topics or concerns coded as masculine—Gitman uses it as a display of what the wall text called “conspicuous femininity,” a glaring intervention into masculinist traditions of art in museums. “Conspicuous” seems to underscore something at the core of the work, as well: an attempt to render visible what has been absented in histories of art and on museum walls.”

Purses of interest: Victoria Gitman's obsessively detailed, incredibly realistic oil-painted portraits of fur clutches...

VICTORIA GITMAN, @GARTH GREENAN GALLERY (NOW--2/14)
opens today: Victoria Gitman Garth Greenan Gallery, 529 W20th St., NYC exhibition of paintings and drawings focusing on two bodies of Gitman’s recent work— life-sized “portraits” of fur purses and a series of diminutive drawings based on compositions by the Old Masters. Set against shallow, neutral-colored backgrounds, each of the fur purses is rendered from close, direct observation. Gitman paints in oils, hair by hair. Like her paintings, Gitman’s new figure drawings are also about the erotics of vision. Her tightly cropped figures hover just on the surface of the picture plane, almost within the viewer’s reach. Simultaneously, the medium—graphite on Mylar—lends the images a kind of evanescence, an immaterial quality that makes them difficult to fully grasp. - thru Feb 14
