Crown Princess Victoria’s royal tours → Japan, 2017

Japan holds a special place in Victoria’s heart. It was the location for her first solo tour as a young woman and now, 16 years later, she was returning as a confident future Queen. Victoria is a UN Ambassador for the Sustainable Development Goals and her visit was designed to show her about Japan’s achievements in the field. The trip had two main arms. The first was high level diplomatic meetings to talk about sustainability. She attended a seminar at the Embassy with Japanese fishing industry experts, spoke at the UN University, and met with business people leading the way in responsible practices. The second was field visits to learn about the issues first hand. She visited a national supermarket chain leading the way in sustainable fishing, toured the largest fish market in the world, and travelled to the Meiho Tuna Fishery in a major fishing area. Alongside the environmental focus, the tour involved national landmarks and royal mingling. She visited a Shinto temple and a traditional Japanese garden, and met with the Emperor, Empress, Crown Prince and Princess Takamado. And yet, despite the packed schedule,  it was the Crown Princess’s fashion which caught headlines. She was the living embodiment of sustainability when she chose a dress first worn by her mother Silvia 37 years before. It seems Victoria was practicing what she preaches!
