Recapping the Sega 32x
My Sega 32x has had issues for a while. Originally the 2nd hand cable I bought could actually power my 32x without it's adapter. This was odd but I thought nothing of it. This most likely started the downfall of my system in hindsight. The system worked fine with it though but would freeze if I had the cable in and a power cable.
Last month when I turned it on I noticed that all video output by the device would have flickering colors/rolling video. I figured it was the cable and ordered up a new one from Racketboy. No dice.
The internet suggested it was probably the capacitors. I opened the case to see one had bulged and decided to replace it.
Poster omp from http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?42720-32X-capacitor-identification suggested a capacitor list but it was incorrect. The correct listing is below.
CE3 16v 10uF CE4 16v 10uF CE5 16v 10uF CE6 10v 47uF CE7 10v 47uF CE8 10v 47uF - This is the one that was bugled for me. CE9 10v 47uF CE10 10v 47uF CE11 50v 1uF CE12 16v 220uF CE13 50v 1uF CE14 10v 100uF - Mine was originally installed from the factory backwards. I think the labeling on the capacitor was just wrong because it did not function with the new capacitor also backwards. CE15 10v 47uF - This is 47uF not .47uF CE16 16v 220uF CE17 10v 470uF CE18 10v 100uF Sanyo OsCon Solid Cap (16v 100uf same physical size 8mm x 11mm) - You can find low ESR 10v/100uF caps on digikey it doesn't have to be a Sanyo. CE19 10v 100uF CE20 10v 100uF
The recapping (2 hrs) was a success and the system powered back up. The system won't function when the board is in flat though only when tilted. I believe I damaged a ground wire that goes to the cartridge daughter board but rather than fix that now I figured I'd see if the original issue went away.
The system still shows the original issue so I didn't really fix anything. I'm not sure what the leaking capacitor did, but it wasn't the scrolling/color flicker issue. See the video here for details: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGPN-gaDXFQ
At this point I think it's a sync issue. I'm thinking that the composite sync coming from the console is off which causes this issue. When I plug the composite leads into the genesis directly the composite video output works but that does not use the c-sync. The 32x takes the RGB output from the genesis and the c-sync to make the resulting picture and from my understanding merge it's video with the genesis video. I believe at this point my plan of attack is to replace the genesis and see if it goes away and finally buy a backup 32x. Thoughts?
I've got a thread about it going here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=41078
I have a 4 complete spare sets of capacitors available if someone else needs a set of just these capacitors to attempt to recap their own system. Shoot me an email if so!
