Indian team had back to their walls at start of day 5. Things got worse with Rahane getting dismissed soon after for just 4. India 102-3. India looked like losing the match within lunch. Whenever India is pumped up by media or abused by crowd, they have shown great girt in last few years. This was no exception. With Vihari’s form not great, Pant was sent ahead of him. It made sense considering he would face Lyon more. Pant took time to get going. He battled hard to score just 5 runs from first 34 balls. Post that he opened up. He played like a dream. He was dropped at 3 and 56 by Paine. But Indian keeper went on in typical Pant fashion. He attacked Lyon like no one did in recent memory. By the time India went for lunch, they raced to 206-3 with Pant himself scoring 73 of those runs. Australia were a bit rattled. They are a team who like winning and a team who fight till the end. They did both in 2nd session. Pant raced to 97 with 2 crisp boundaries. Score read 250-3. India needed 158 runs in 52 overs of play. A rare victory looked in sight. Smith tried dirty trick of cleaning up Pant’s crease guard of Pant to disrupt Pant’s focus. Against the run of play Pant was dismissed attacking Lyon for 97. It was gem of a knock and one for the ages. To hit 97 against arguably best attack in world right know in SCG on 5th day speaks volumes of the innings from Indian dasher. India 250-4. Pujara completed 6000 runs in the process in tests. He scored 2nd fifty of the match. He showed intent when he hit Cummins for 3 consecutive fours. He lost focus a bit when Hazelwood castled him for 77. He occupied for 205 balls. India 272-5. It was a good knock. India still had to bat close to 50 overs. Ashwin joined Vihari. Both took India to tea at 280-5. First ball post tea, Cummins bowled a bouncer which hit Ashwin’s arm guard. Umpire declared him out. Ashwin survived via DRS. Post that Australia bowled barrage of bouncers. Vihari and Ashwin kept defending or bending down. They didn’t go for any runs as Vihari had hamstring injury. Both showed great courage. They were beaten a few times . In Adelaide, India edged everything. Luck was a bit on India’s side. Lyon bowled long spell post tea. He had huge success against India in prior tours but this time India had answer to most of ploys. Ashwin played him like a champion. Paine looked frustrated and even sledged Ashwin. He used words which could have been and should have been avoided. Ashwin gave his piece of mind in calm and typical Ashwin way. He is an absolute class act and made Australian captain like a cheap domestic cricketer. Adding to that Paine even dropped Vihari when 10 overs were still there. He had dropped 3 times on final day. His keeping skills seems to be even worse than Indian star Pant. It was India’s day and Australia agreed for a draw with one over pending. Ashwin-Vihari batted for 256 balls and got bruises all over the body but battled hard to save the match for India. With no Kohli, SHami and injury to Vihari, Pant and Jadeja, India still managed to grab a draw against mighty Australian team in their own den on a final day pitch in their favorite ground SCG. This day is one for the ages. Australian crowd should learn one thing for ever. Never abuse and specifically never racially abuse Indian team. They can bite back so hard that it starts embarrassing opponents. Hope India take this fight to Brisbane. It would be interesting to see who is fit for Indian team for Brisbane. For now, just lets celebrate 3 things on this special day. Indian draw which is as good as loss for Australia. Indian team’s apt gift for Dravid on his birthday. Finally Virat-Anushaka were blessed with baby girl on the same day !! What a day to savour !!. Take this AUSTRALIA!!!!

India lost the toss yet again in 2nd test in Christchurch. Umesh was brought in for injured Ishant. Ashwin was dropped and Jadeja was picked. Boult trapped Mayank early. India 30-1. Shaw then counter attacked. He and Pujara took India past 50. Shaw went past 50. Jamieson dismissed him immediately after that. India 80-2. Southee trapped Virat for 3 just after lunch. India 85-3. Rahane and Pujara took India past 100. Against the run of play, Southee dismissed Rahane. India 113-4. Vihari was dropped early by Watling. He and Pujara had vital 81 run stand. Both went past 50s. 1 ball before tea, Wagner dismissed Vihari for 55. Wagner’s tactics was one dimensional. Bowl short on ribs or come round the wicket and bowl short on off stump line. That wicket triggered a collapse. Jamieson grabbed his 5-fer as India were reduced to 216-9 from 192-4. Bumrah and Shami had 26 run stand. India were dismissed for 242. Blundell and Latham had a brilliant start . They took NZ to 63-0 by end of day 1. India had a dream start to 2nd day. Umesh trapped Blundell early on. NZ 66-1. Bumrah dismissed Williamson just for 2. NZ 69-2. Taylor and Latham took NZ past 1000. Jadeja dismissed Taylor for 15. Umesh grabbed a good catch. NZ 109-3. Shami then dismissed Latham for 52. NZ 130-4. He dismissed Nicholls soon after. NZ 133-5. NZ reached lunch at 142-5, exactly 100 run behind. Bumrah had a dream over where he dismissed Watling and Southee in space of 3 balls. NZ 153-7. India had chance to dismiss NZ for under 190. But NZ tail wagged again. Grandhomme and Jamieson had 24 run stand first, then Jamieson -Wagner had 51 run stand. That hurt India. Instead of 50 plus stand, India just had 7 run lead. Jamieson was last to be dismissed for 49. His dream start to International career is taking new heights. He just cant do anything wrong. NZ took that momentum to bowler. Boult trapped Mayank in 2nd over. India 8-1. Southee dismissed Shaw with a short ball. India 26-2. Virat and Pujara took India past 50. Grandhomme trapped Virat for 14. India 51-3. Wagner-Jamieson had barrage of short balls bowled at Pujara and Rahane. Rahane was dropped at 2 as well. They rattled Indian star batsmen with precise short bowling. Wagner finally had Rahane bowled. Rahane ws expecting a short ball but it was a not that straight. He hit the ball back to stumps. India 72-3. Boult dismissed Pujara and nightwatchman with cracking incoming reverse swinging balls in last 10 minutes of play. India 89-6. India ended day at 90-6 (97-6 including lead). That Jamieson could be the difference between 2 sides. He has been the difference between 2 sides. He can bat like a champion, bowl like a star and even field well. India have a habit of making debutants superstars. After Sam Curran, it is Jamieson’s turn now. India need min of 170 to make a match of it. They need Jadeja-Pant-Vihari to play out of their skin to take India to that position. Match could well get over before lunch tomorrow if Indian batsmen falter early.

In women’s T20 world cup, Rp Yadav’s 4-23 helped India restrict Lanka to 113 in their final league match. Shefali was dropped twice early on. She made the most of it. Her 34 ball 47 helped India win by 7 wickets with 33 balls to spare.

In first ODi, Klassen’s classy 123 and Miller’s 64 helped SA set Australia a target of 292. These 2 had 149 run stand. Australia were cruising at 133-2 in 27th over. Once Maharaj dismissed Labushagne for 41, match turned on its head. Australia were dismissed for 217. Steve Smith top scored for Australia with 76. Australia’s middle order looks weak with Carey and M Marsh out of form.

In Ranji SF, Karnataka pacers rattled Bengal. They reduced them to 67-6 . AP Majumdar then played knock of this season’s IPL. His 149 helped Bengal reach a target of 312. By 3rd over, Karnataka were reduced to 5-2. Samarth and Nair were dismissed. Rahul and Siddarth had 30 run stand before Akash Deep dismissed the later. Rahul and Manish took Karnataka to 45-3 by lunch. Sheldon Jackson’s 103 helped Saurashtra reach 289-7 by lunch on 2nd day. He has been very consistent in last 2 seasons.

In Dubai open, Djokovic saved 3 match points against Monfils in Sf before beating him 2-6 7-6 6-1. He faced Tsitsipas in finals. He beat him with ease 6-3 6-4. He has been unbeaten in 2020 ATP season. In Mexican open, Nadal outclassed Dimitrov and Fritz in SF and finals to win his first title of 2020. He never lost a set in whole tournament which is a great achievement.

In EPL, Norwich City beat Leicester city 1-0. Chelsea were held to 2-2 draw by Bournemouth. Match of the week was Liverpool against Watford. Liverpool’s poor week continued. After losing first leg of 2nd champions league match, they were shocked by Watford 3-0. Ismaila Sarr scored 2 goals. Liverpool’s 44 match unbeaten EPL streak was ended. Arsenal had record of 49 matches. They last lost EPL match in January 2019.

WI needed early wickets and they got it straight away. Holder got one to straighten and Pant played across the line to be castled. Vihari and Jadeja took India past 300 which was the first target to please Virat Kohli. Cornwall dismissed Jadeja soon after for 16. India 302-6. Cornwall could have had Vihari too but was dropped at slip. He played flawless post that to reach his maiden test hundred. The whole India team stood to applause. He and Ishant had a stunning 112 run stand which took the gas of WI. Ishant scored his maiden test fifty as well. India were eventually dismissed for 416. Holder grabbed his 6th 5-fer. He also became 23rd WI player to grab 100 test wickets. WI left a lot of balls alone early on against Indian pacers. Campbell though had to play at a Bumrah beauty which pitched on middle and moved away. WI 9-1. Bumrah went on a roll as he dismissed Bravo, Brooks and Chase of consecutive deliveries to become just 3rd Indian bowler in test history to claim a test hattrick after Harbhajan and Irfan Pathan. WI 13-4. He was unplayable. He was swing away and in at pace which was troubling WI batsmen no end He had numbers of 3.4-1.3-4 post hat-trick. Speaking of rhythmic numbers !!! He later dismissed Braithwaite to grab his 2nd 5 fer in 5 days. WI 22-5. Hetmyer got a bit of luck as Kohli dropped him off SHami. He and Holder had a 45 run stand before Shami castled Hetmyer. In closing stages of play Bumrah dismissed WI captain . WI 78-7 and ended day’s play at 87-7. India could well win the match by 3rd day. Bumrah’s spell looked like 6-20 in 9 overs. Pretty sensational bowling.

In US open, Wozniacki and Ostapenko lost in straight sets against Andreescu and Ahn. Mertens, Bencic, Georges and Townsend reached 4th round with ease. Nadal easily beat Chung in straight sets to setup 4th round clash with Cilic who beat Isner in 4 tough sets. Nadal didn’t even face a break point which was a brilliant achievement. Zverev was up 5-2 against Beden before losing first set in tiebreaker. He regained composure to beat him in 4 sets to set up 4th round clash with Schwartzman. Winner of that match could potentially face Nadal or Cilic in QF. Kyrgios who has been overhyped by media was beaten in straight sets by Rublev. Rublev would meet Berretini in 4th round. Monfils beatn Shapovalov in 5 set thriller. He would Face Andujar in 4th round. Winner of this match would face winner of Rublev vs Berretini match. Great chance for players to make a slam final.

In EPL, City continued their good run as they thrashed Brighton 4-0 thanks to 2 goals by their star player Aguero. Liverpool continued their clean slate run in EPL as they won 4 of 4 matches to be top of leaderboard. ManU were held to 1-1 draw by Southampton. Chelsea were held to 2-2 draw by Sheff Utd. In La Liga, Barcelona were held to 2-2 draw by Osasuna. They have had poor start to La Liga with just 5 points form 3 games and are in 7th position currently.

Yashaswini bags gold in 10m Air Pistol in ISSF Shooting world cup and with it also wins Olympic quota place. Indian shooters are flying high which is good to see prior to Tokyo Olympics scheduled next year.

In 2nd test, Australia won the toss and chose to bat without any hesitation on a new ground in Perth. Australia retained the same team. Injuries to Ashwin and Rohit forced Kohli to replace them with Umesh and Vihari. It was a bit of a shock that Bhuvi was ignored considering he can bat a bit as well. India’s tail will be long without Ash / Bhuvi. India started to leak runs upfront in first 1 hour. 45 runs came in first 10 overs. India bowled a short length . They should have bowled a bit fuller. They did that in 2nd hour. Australia found it tough to score runs. Only 21 runs came in 2nd hour. Australia 66-0 by lunch. Australia continued dream run post lunch. Harris looked in great touch. Finch was coming into his own. Both scored fifties. India needed a breakthrough and Bumrah gave India one. He trapped Finch. India 112-1. India had a dream period post that. In next 19 overs, India took 3 more wickets Umesh dismissed Khawaja who was clearly struggling to rotate strike. Vihari then dismissed Harris for 70. Post tea Ishant dismissed Handscomb. Kohli grabbed a sensational catch. Australia 148-4. Marsh and Head consolidated for Australia after this shaky period. Marsh was dropped by Pant when Australia score was at 186. These 2 took Australia past 200. India need a wicket or 2 before new ball. It was Vihari again who broke the partnership. He dismissed Marsh. Australia 232-5. Ishant dismissed Head with first ball post new ball was taken. Australia 251-6. India had bounced back well from 112-0. Australia ended day at 277-6. Australia would be more happy with this position than India. Australia might have gone too many for India already. A score in excess of 350 could cause India severe problems. Kohli would probably be repenting of not picking Bhuvi or Jadeja who could have been handy on this pitch.

Final league matches of Champions league was played this week. Spurs levelled with Barca to qualify for champions league. Liverpool outclassed Napoli 1-0 to qualify too. With Man City and ManU already qualified, it is a rare occurrence where all EPL teams have qualified for knockout stage. In other matches, Moscow humiliated Real Madrid 3-0 who had already qualified. Man City beat Hoffenheim 2-1. Valencia beat ManU 2-1.

In World tour finals, PV Sindhu was on fire. She beat Yamaguchi 24-22 21-15 in opening match. She then beat world number 1 Tai Tzu Ying 14-21 21-16 21-18. This was her first win over world number 1 in more than 2 years. She then beat Zhang Beiwen in straight sets to qualify for SF. She was runner up last year. Sindhu and Yamaguchi qualified from group A. Tai Tzu Ying retired mid way of final match. Okuhara and Intanon qualified from other group. Sindhu faces Intanon in SF. In mens too, Sameer Verma made it to SF. He lost opening match to Momota. But he later cameback to beat Sugianto and WangChaoren in straight sets. He would meet Shi Yuqi in SF.

In world cup hockey, India took lead against Dutch in first quarter. But they ended up losing 2-1 in a close encounter. India have not reached world cup SF since 1975 . India have now lost after leading in critical matches so many times that it has become tough to digest. In other matches, Australia reached SF after winning 17th match consecutively in world cup. Belgium beat Germany which was shock of the tournament. England beat Olympic champions which was another shocker. There is only one constant thing in hockey and that is AUsralian dominance.
