Tagged by @viktorniciforov to share the last few lines in a recent WIP. Hemmed and hawed over finding something I’m proud of but couldn’t find anything I’d left off in a place I liked so I settled on the last thing I’d actually been writing. Tagging @professorsparklepants and @rtnortherly provided they would like to play.
Enjoy this snippet of an unpleasant family dinner:
“We should have assigned you names that couldn’t be altered. Though it has not stopped you in the past.” Lucille’s eyes turned disapprovingly to him once more.
“Yes.” Bertram agreed, “I am sure that name alteration has become quite influential.”
Really, dad? Kane couldn’t repress the sigh this time. He couldn’t believe that they were still having this conversation.
“If you have something to say then say it.” Lucille criticized, “Don’t just sit there making noises.”
Kane looked around the room at his glaring parents and miserable siblings and sighed again. They’d been having this argument for a decade. It was hardly going to be resolved by him saying something. At least Lydia looked amused standing quietly in her place at the wall behind mother. “It’s just a spelling. There’s nothing standardized-“
“It is standardized on your birth certificate.” Bertram snapped, forgetting, seemingly, his earlier lesson on interruption.
“And a matter of respect.” Lucille reinforced. “A word you seem to have conveniently skipped in your lessons.”
“Or perhaps it was covered in one of the lessons you snuck out of.”
Kane wanted to point out that he only ever snuck out of solo study where he was left in the study room all on his own meaning that when he wasn’t there no one was actually going over anything but the evening was already unpleasant enough without him picking a fight back at them.
