Vilcek Foundation awards $250,000 in prizes to immigrant dancers and choreographers

NEW YORK, Sept. 7, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- The Vilcek Foundation announces the recipients of the 2022 Vilcek Foundation Prizes in the Arts and Humanities.

In 2022, the Vilcek Foundation Prizes in the Arts and Humanities are awarded in dance.

In 2022, the Vilcek Foundation is awarding four prizes in dance. The main prize—the Vilcek Prize in Dance—includes a cash award of $100,000. Three smaller awards—the Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise in Dance—each include a cash award of $50,000. The prizes are part of the foundation's work to recognize and celebrate immigrants' contributions to intellectual and cultural life in the United States.

165 East 73rd St: A Carriage House for Sale in the Year of the Horse

A historic Beaux-Arts-style Upper East Side carriage house that has remained in the same family for its entire 110-year existence — morphing from a repository for horses and carriages belonging to the owner of a Fifth Avenue mansion, to a garage and chauffeur’s digs, to a single-family home, to a quaint rental — is about to enter the market at $14.5 million, as per this NYT article.

The two-story, 25' wide carriage house (with an identical twin next door at #173), designed by George L. Amoroux in 1903-04, consists of 5,058 sq ft, and needs significant updating; ceiling heights 15' downstairs, 10' upstairs; annual property taxes are nearly $55,000. Ideal for transformation into a loft, with the rare commodity of a private garage.

Side Note:  The twin carriage house at 173 E. 73rd St. originally belonged to the same owner as #165, Henry Harper Benedict (a great-uncle to current seller Mrs. Weiser), the president of the Remington Typewriter Company.  Mr. Benedict sold #173 in 1909, and it has since become the headquarters of the Vilcek Foundation, which honors and supports foreign-born scientists and artists who have made outstanding contributions to society in the U.S.

U.S.-BASED FOREIGN-BORN DIGITAL ARTISTS: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EXHIBITION AND FUNDING

                          From Vilcek Foundation:

The Vilcek Foundation is pleased to announce a new initiative entitled dART, short for digital art, developed to celebrate the creativity and accomplishments of foreign-born artists working in the realm of new media art.

We are now accepting submissions of work created by foreign-born artists living permanently in the United States, using computer-based and new media technologies, to be featured in a new digital art space premiering on Vilcek.org in early 2012.

Following review by an expert in the field, one applicant will be chosen to exhibit work in the new digital art space – the dARTboard; he or she will also receive an Artist’s Honorarium of $5,000.

There is no application fee.

Submissions must be received electronically no later than 5pm EDT on October 21st, 2011.

In the New Yorker’s 2010 “20 Under 40” list, a compilation of emerging writers to watch, nearly half of the authors named are foreign-born. The list illuminates a trend the Vilcek Foundation has long championed: the important role immigrants play in shaping the American voice, in literature as well as other aspects of the arts. Join us in celebrating and exploring this role at a reading and Q&A panel with the winner and finalists of the 2011 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Literature. Dinaw Mengestu, Ilya Kaminsky, Téa Obreht, Vu Tran, and Simon Van Booy will be reading. Liesl Schillinger, a member of the jury for the Prize and a literary critic for The New York Times, will moderate the panel.
