cancer, death, mental illness trigger warning
- kai was born in lansing, michigan. he is the eldest child of three, with two twin sisters three years younger than him. his mother mother lanelle was a high school english teacher, loving mother, and devoted church goer. everyone in their local neighbourhood knew her for her selfless heart, providing food and friendship for those she knew were doing it rough. kai’s father was the famous boxer shaun ackerman, the man who kai would eventually follow in the steps of. shaun was a heavyweight fighter who reached the heights of his career in the 1980′s. kai’s earliest memories involve the local boxing ring where his dad would train, and kai would run around giving towels to the various members of the ring.
- it was a happy and fulfilling early childhood until shaun’s scheduled health check pre-match came up with a concerning lump on his shoulder. after seeing a specialist, it was determined that shaun had hodgkins lymphoma, a type of cancer in the lymphatic system. it was a blow to the entire family, and to shaun’s career. the ackerman’s promptly made the decision to pack their bags and move to new york to get the best possible treatment at the time. kai was four at this point, he didn’t quite understand what was going on, but he knew the situation was serious.
- the ackerman’s spared no option to fight for their patriach’s life. shaun endured chemotherapy, radiation therapy, a bone marrow transplant, and various drugs that were experimental at the time. kai often remembered watching his mother pray over his bed, as his father would come in and out of hospital over a period of four years. shaun slowly deteriorated, and finally came the acceptance his career was over. shaun experienced an metastatic growth on his left lung which ultimately killed him on the 3rd of september 1997. kai was eight.
- the ackerman’s decided to make the choice to stay in new york state after shaun’s passing, to stay his burial site. plus, kai had been enrolled into boxing classes in his attempt to keep his father’s spirit alive. he didn’t tell anyone the famous shaun ackerman was his father, but when his trainers finally realised who he was, they weren’t surprised why this young skinny boy had so much talent and potential. lanelle always worried for him, remembering the injuries her late-husband experienced in the ring, but knew it was an outlet for the young boys sadness, kai was not the same child he once was after shaun passed.
- spending the rest of his childhood in brooklyn, kai was a quite kid. with a small group of loyal friends, he didn’t have much interest in being the popular kid. any bully’s who tried to put him down for his introverted personality, were promptly aquatinted with kai’s fist. with his training, kai was a strong kid, and stood up for the other kids targeted by the bullies. he found himself in the principles office often for beating up the meaner kids on the playground who targeted the smaller ones. he became a somewhat of a hero to the underdogs of the neighbourhood, as the bullies never seemed to come back for round two after they squared up with kai ackerman.
- lanelle realised once her son was in highschool kai’s personality began to change. he was always a quite and respectful kid, but he began to experience sudden bouts of agitation, and anger, often coming out in the ring, getting him into more trouble with his coach. then he’d suddenly swing into bouts of depression. it took effort on lanelle’s behalf, but she managed to get her son to see a psychologist, who diagnosed him with bipolar disorder. regardless, kai’s relationship with his mother never changed. always adoring her, he’s confident that no matter what happens she’d always accept him for who he was — and he would be right.
- nowerdays, kai is working to achieve the greatness of his father, and fill his shoes. a professional super middleweight, kai has made a name for himself in the sport. he’s become a little bit better at the whole social thing, but he is still an immensely private person. most of his girlfriends in the past always seemed to struggle to tap past the solid walls he built around himself, afraid of people seeing him at either extremes he experiences. kai will be a loyal friend to those he likes, but keeps most at an arms length from himself.

BACKSTORY
her name says it all. her father really liked star wars so leia came to be indeed her father’s princess. her parents came to new york city to expand their already very successful investment company that also dabbled in the music industry because they could. the kangs were millionnaires even before they took ownership of that penthouse suite on the new york skyline. within ten years they would be billionnaires.
leia had always been a charming girl up for some fun. she tried hard in school but was naturally distracted and so the leia, you could have done better speech came into existence. she got good grades, was above average and that was enough for her. she never felt the need to be pushing herself but maybe that was because she felt her privilege coming from a rich family. she was a people person and enjoyed conversing more than she loved doing essays.
she had her first big fight with her parents when she revealed she didn’t want to go to college. she hung around with manhattan’s elite but if she was being honest, she found them insufferable and would much rather just use her fake id to have some fun. it was a big deal and first but then her brother happened. he had ended up in the hospital after an accidental drug overdose.
one thing to get straight is that leia absolutely adores her big brother. he was the one that was always so encouraging to her to do what made her happy. for all she knew, he was her hero and was owning his life to the fullest. why didn’t she see that he was struggling? hindsight was a useful thing but leia hadn’t been told about her brother’s addiction and he had ended up in the hospital. she was absolutely blindsided and the attention was taken off of her and put on her brother who needed it more.
leia wasn’t particularly mad about it, he needed help. however, the lack of supervision gave her a boost to be crowned one of new york city’s most decorated party girls. she’d be the first one there and the first one to leave. she felt so free and with no real pressure from her parents to get a job or make something off herself, that’s where she would stay. it made her blind to the fights that her parents had, the fights they had while discussing the welfare of her brother and how he was constantly struggling.
by this point, leia had pushed him away. when their parents didn’t give him money, he came to her and a couple of times, she buckled and gave him what he wanted. she loved him, she wanted him to love her too, for things to go back to how they once were but every time he came back, stopped her in the street and made her swear not to tell their parents, her heart sank a little more until she couldn’t do it anymore. enough was enough and she refused to help him. they were both upset for different reasons, he vanished for two weeks and then ended up back in rehab.
kang youngchul died the day after her twenty fourth birthday, in the early hours of the morning while she was still celebrating, from a heart attack that no one could see coming. leia was drunk when she finally rang her mother back. she didn’t believe it at first ut when it set in, she wished she hadn’t celebrated so hard. it all felt like a dream when she woke up hungover but it was real and she had to feel everything all over again.
it was a surprise to everyone when youngchul left nearly all of his assets, including his 98% share in the kang enterprise company to leia. she knew her parents were having trouble but was never at home enough to register how bad it was (maybe purposefully). he had left a property to zach but he wasn’t there for the will reading because he was in rehab and her mother was very adament that he couldn’t break his stay.
the twenty four year old who has had no proper job is now in charge of kang enterprises, much to her mother’s bitterness. the woman is upset and she doesn’t know what to do. she has her brother living with her in her new manhattan skyline apartment but when he doesn’t come home for a few days, it worries her. leia is trying so hard to try manage everything, to step up seen as her father has trusted her. leia stopped partying and started trying to learn business, taking advice from people who now worked for her? it was weird for her and still is.
people in her age group recognise her as the former party girl of the upper east side and others, youngchul’s legacy that got nearly everything and gave nothing to his wife. leia is providing for her mother but she wonders how bad it must have been between them to write her out entirely. leia is trying her best but sometimes does find her impulsive side taking over just because she needs a break from the pressure.

Jamie has always been at odds with his father, his father often ignoring Jamie as a kid in favor of work. His mother was wonderful, and they had a close relationship.
When Jamie was five, there was a fire at the neighbor’s house that quickly spread to his own house. It was all over the news and he’s had one person approach him that remembers it. His father had been away on a business trip when the fire happened over night. His mother died saving Jamie.
After that followed an even more strained relationship between Jamie and his father. Every time he looked at Jamie, he saw memories of his wife, and he tried as hard as he could to distract himself with work or alcohol.
After the fire, there was a court hearing in which Jamie received settlement money from the neighbors who started the fire. He wouldn’t talk for weeks after the fire and needed to go to therapy due to grief.
Jamie hasn’t touched the money.
When he was eighteen, he and his father moved from London, UK to New York City for a job. Jamie didn’t have much going for him and he has family in New York, so he went with his father, still living with him. He moved out pretty much immediately when going to New York and got a job.
As an adult, Jamie is pretty lost. He often compensates with humor. He can be very closed off, but he will occasionally open up to those that he loves or that are intimately close to him.

Viviana ‘Viv’ Torres was born in New York City, New York to two happy parents. They had a large family and she was surrounded by grandparents on both sides, aunts and uncles, and many cousins.
Viv’s sister was born when Viviana was two years old. Since her birth, they have been very close.
There was strong feminist energy in her family, and Viviana picked up on that right away and developed her thought process at a young age through the lenses of a feminist. Her mother was a stay-at-home mom due to her experiencing depression in the workplace and she and her husband brought color to the two children’s lives, showering them with books, literature, and music. There was a natural flow to the family, from their day to day routine, to their nightly routine, inside which Viv always felt safe.
They did a lot of traveling. Viviana was drawn to the ocean from a very young age. She learned how to swim when she was four, and when she was five she began competing in swim team.
There was a sort of peace she found in the water and underneath it, a stillness, a bliss. And she was good at it. Really good. Fast.
Her childhood consisted of training and competing. She loved it.
She met her current (2021) husband as a child. They were neighbors, and they became best friends.
At thirteen, they kissed for the first time.
They were that cute high school couple that you feel like will end up married.
And they did. Right after she went through nursing school for three years and became a nurse, he asked Viviana to marry him and she said yes.
So they were married, and two years later, they had their first child. A baby girl named Alicia.
Three years later they conceive Florence and that is when they begin having marital issues. Less of a sex life, practically none. Her husband is a psychologist and is often very busy and tired. And with her being a nurse and them having two children, they’re often stressed. Sometimes, they clash. They never fight in front of the children, always going to a private place. The spark has gone out but sometimes, they find it again, and it’s intense enough to make their heads spin. But the fighting over the past year has worn them down. There’s no doubt in their minds though: they want to stay together.
They’ve agreed to an open sexual relationship, although neither really wants to do it, especially her husband. Though he hasn’t told Viviana he’s refusing to sleep with other people - wanting to let her venture out without having to feel guilt that she’s the only one doing it.

tw. sudden death, car crash, and fertility issues
malachi was born to a small but well respected jewish family in brooklyn. the community was surprisingly tight knit, seeing as in big cities such as new york it’s not that uncommon to not know your neighbours.
nicknamed ki, or mali as a kid, malachi grew up watching his father work in the newspaper printing business. the family patriarch proudly sported his curious son around the factory, expecting he’d enter the news industry at some capacity. and malachi would.
malachi met his high school sweetheart eva in softmore year, and absolutely fell head over heels. by the time they were eighteen and both graduated, the pair would promptly get married. a nervous, fumbling malachi proposing on a holiday. she accepted.
he has many good memories of eva, one particular of painting their new apartment together and getting the paint absolutely everywhere due to the play-fight they got into, chasing each other with the paint brushes.
everything seemed to be going to pairs way for a while, malachi got into college for journalism, they were on top of their bills, and eva got her dream job by sheer coincidence of right place right time. the only thing that would make it complete, was a baby.
after further testing, eva would soon discover she had a low ovarian reserve, meaning after five years of trying she would suddenly learn her chances of conceiving were very low. but as the couple usually did, they tried to look on the bright side. they tried ivf, and other methods they worked hard to afford. and so a few months after malachi’s thirtieth birthday, over ten years of trying, eva was pregnant.
charlotte naomi bloom was born at a health weight of 3kg, in 2013. life was perfect, apart from the more stressful duties of being parent, but malachi didn’t mind.
but their happiness wasn’t to last long. on july 22nd 2017, eva was driving to work like any other morning, when a distracted driver hit her from the side. she died on impact.
if it wasn’t for the love of his daughter, malachi would of spiralled. but that’s not to say it didn’t cripple him. he was inconsolable, not only for the loss of his beloved wife, but explaining to his then four year old daughter that mum wasn’t coming home.
malachi is so very occupied with being the best dad he’s letting some of his self care and mental health go and not really dealing with his grief. charlotte is his pride and joy, and so he funnels all his energy into her needs.
he's the quiet dad that drops off his daughter at ballet with messy hair, but always smells like cedar wood for some reason. he likes to wear jumpers with deep blues or browns, and worn denim jackets. it’s the family joke at some point they’re going to burn his wardrobe and get him some more modern clothes.
this year will mark the fourth anniversary of eva’s passing, and malachi hasn’t made much progress on moving on. but for the sake of his daughter, his family is gently encouraging him to do so. however, the journalist isn’t so sure just yet.
