Most assumed that Steve had emerged from the ice the exact same way he had gone in. He had not shown any signs of damage and it seemed that the serum had kept him completely healthy. Or so they thought.
They didn’t know 50 out of those 70 years he had been aware of everything. They didn’t know about the bitter thoughts that circled through his head as he waited for any rescue. The fact that he was asleep when he was finally was discovered by SHIELD was a blessing for them.
He decided to give the world a chance when he found out how much time had passed. What he found out is the world was just as flawed if not more so. He had began his plans then.
But then he meet Tony. A shining light within a world so covered in grime. Of course he found out about all the ways the world had tried to extinguish Tony, but his light was strong and continued to shine. For his light the world could spin on.
They were happy for a time. And then came the discovery of Bucky. His first ever light was now broken, dimmed by the torture and covered in black by Hydra. Shield was revealed to be corrupted. He got Bucky back but only barely.
He thought they could pretend, continue living together, but when he returned to Tony. The house was gone, destroyed by Mandarin. The world didn’t deserve his mercy.
He planned and waited. His two lights met and soon the three were intertwined. It didn’t take much to convince them to stay with him. Sure a few drugs were involved but it kept his lights safe as he deconstructed the world.
