— Vinland Saga
A bit of October 10th history...
1780 - Great Hurricane of 1780 kills 20,000 - 30,000 in the Caribbean; Atlantic’s deadliest recorded hurricane
1933 - 1st synthetic detergent, “Dreft”, by Procter and Gamble goes on sale
1957 - A fire at the Windscale nuclear plant in Cumbria, England becomes the world’s 1st major nuclear accident
1965 - “Vinland Map” is introduced by Yale University as being the 1st known map of America, drawn about 1440 (pictured)
1969 - “Jesus Christ Superstar” soundtrack is recorded
A new analysis shows that the ink used in the Vinland Map was created no earlier than the 1920s, which further demonstrates that the famous item purportedly showing a medieval view of the Americas is actually a modern-day forgery.
Maybe the best document mystery/controversy ever: on October 10, 1965, Yale announced their determination that the Vinland Map was first known map of America, dating it circa 1440. At that time it was thought to confirm Viking exploration of North America.
The map had first appeared in the 1950s, bound together with two medieval documents (the Tartar Relation and the Speculum Histioriale), and is still subject to intense scrutiny. This 2013 story details the research of an “amateur” historian thought to have by historians to possibly have found credible new information the map’s actual, later origin. This 2009 opinion claims to prove its’ authenticity...
Let the debate rage on!

If the Vinland map is real, it supports the fact that the Vikings were the first to sail to North America, long before Christopher Columbus.
History books taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America. A special day was even named in his honor, and it has been celebrated as a federal holiday since 1937. However, in 1957, a new discovery surfaced that would turn the belief of Columbus discovering America on its head. A Spanish-based Italian dealer named Enzo Ferrajoli was trying to sell an old map called the Vinland map.
