In another life | Vinnie Hacker
pairing: vinnie hacker x fem!reader
summary: she lost him once, now he’s back.
warnings: heavy angst, micro cheating, angst, crying, more angst.
You stood before him, heavy tears streaming down your face as he held his bags.
Your arms were shaking, your bottom lip trembling as you shook your head.
You let out, your voice shaking. Your eyes pleading, hoping he’d change his mind.
But his eyes only softened, stepping closer to you because he wanted to calm you down.
To show you that he cared.
“Baby, you know I need to.”
But you didn’t buy it. You were stubborn and young.
And too over heels for him.
“You can’t just leave me here alone. And disappear like we never meant anything.”
You sniffled, your words making him guilty.
And maybe that was exactly what you wanted.
He placed his free hand on your cheek, caressing it with his thumb softly as he wiped your tears off.
The sight of you crying because of him was breaking his heart. But he knew it was necessary.
“I can’t stay here, baby. You know that I can’t.”
He whispered, his eyes softening as they stared into your teary ones.
“I’ll still be there, calling you. We’ll communicate, yeah?”
You wished he kept his promise for longer than four months. But after that, silence.
He stoped calling, stopped texting.
There was no longer any communication between you two. Even though you tried to contact him, he never contacted you back.
It was like he forgot. Forgot about you and everything you two had.
And it hurt. Hurt more than anything.
But you knew you needed to move on. Even though it was the last thing you wanted to do.
That was why you were standing there, in front of a mirror, trying on wedding dresses.
Your friends were sitting on a couch in the salon, the biggest smiles on their lips as they stared at their beautiful friend.
You whispered with the softest smile on your face as you stared at the white dress on your body. It wasn’t too long, too big.
One of your friends said and you immediately smiled at her words.
“He loves everything I wear.”
You mumbled out, giggling with your friends.
And before you could even process it properly, it was the night before the wedding.
You always wanted a big bridal party. A lot of alcohol, laughter and your closest friends.
But you didn’t feel like it now.
Your friends weren’t happy with the idea of no party. But they understood that you wanted to be calm before your big day.
It was because your mind was telling you it wasn’t the right thing. That the whole wedding wasn’t right.
Yeah, Alex was great. He was everything you ever wanted and more. He gave you peace and comfort.
He cared for you. He knew what you were and weren’t like. Knew you better than you knew yourself.
It was few years ago that you said your last goodbye. It was five years since you last saw him.
But he was still on your mind, even now when you were about to get married.
And he wouldn’t leave. Because your mind was still stuck on the what if’s.
What if he never got known? What if he never left the city you grew up in together?
What if he never left you.
He was your first boyfriend. Your first kiss, first holding hands. Your first everything.
You thought you’d grow old together. And now, you were about to marry another man.
It was weird. Fate was weird.
You felt like it wasn’t fair to you. That it gave you the wrong cards to play with.
Because in those cards, there was no Vinnie anymore.
You took a deep breath as you buried your feet deeper into the sand, looking into the distance on the ocean.
Moving to LA was a great idea.
You met your soon to be husband there, met your best friend there. And more of your closest friends.
You weren’t even surprised Vinnie moved there some time ago.
But you were still somehow mad at him for that. For leaving you when you could’ve been something.
You sighed, almost slapping yourself for the fact that you send him a wedding invitation.
You didn’t know his new address, so you send it to his childhood home. Where everybody knew you, where everybody knew about the two of you.
You felt embarrassed for even sending it. It was wrong, so wrong.
It wasn’t fair towards Alex. But you still did it.
Because it felt right to you.
The sky was beautiful that night, stars shining. And you almost wished they’d tell you that what you were about to do, was wrong.
But you knew they wouldn’t. Because Alex was your ride or die. And your soon to be forever.
Your phone started ringing next to you, you reached your hand to find out who was still up in this hour.
You smiled softly when you saw your best friend’s name.
You said the second you picked up the call and pressed the phone to your ear.
Your friend chuckled softly.
“A little. I just wanted to know how you’re feeling.”
You took a deep breath at that question, knowing you couldn’t tell her the truth.
Even though she was your best friend.
“I’m great. It’s just really difficult to understand, you know. I’ll no longer have my family name tomorrow.”
She hummed at those words and you immediately knew she didn’t buy it.
But she didn’t say anything about it.
“Alex is a great guy, love. He really cares and loves you. ”
She mumbled out, preparing herself to say something more.
“But if it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.”
You didn’t say anything for a moment, just let it linger in your mind before you hummed.
You could see her smile on the other line as she hummed back.
And after that she hung up, knowing you needed some time alone to think about everything.
Before you could put your phone away, someone started calling you again.
You rolled your eyes, thinking it was her again. That she wanted to say something about you being alone.
But your eyebrows furrowed when you saw an unknown number there. You hesitated for a second before picking it up.
And then followed silence. You didn’t say anything and the person on the other said nothing either.
You just listened to each others breathing for a moment before they finally said something.
In that moment, your entire world stopped. Your heart stopped beating for a second, your breath hitched.
Your mind must’ve been playing tricks on you. Because this couldn’t be truth.
You mumbled out, hoping the other person wasn’t who you thought. That he just had a wrong number.
He said with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
And you just sat, with your lips slightly apart. With your eyes slightly wide. Because you couldn’t believe it was really him.
“I got your invitation, you know.”
He said, his tone changing slightly. Not so joyful anymore.
You only hummed, mentally slapping yourself again for sending it.
“I can’t believe you’re getting married.”
He mumbled out, his voice low and deep.
“Yeah, I am. It’s tomorrow.”
You rolled your eyes at your words, and at how awkward you sounded.
He hummed at your words, nodding his head even though you couldn’t see.
“That’s great, really great. I’m happy for you.”
Loud silence where no one spoke. Where the two of you thought about another words, but non were coming.
Because you both knew he lied. He was everything but happy for you. And you both knew it.
You didn’t know what to tell him. It’s been so long. And this wasn’t the right time to talk about it all.
“You still have my number.”
You mumbled out after seconds of silence, that felt like long hours.
You hummed, nodding your head at his words.
You whispered under your breath, not being able to hold it in.
It was mean from him to call you. Mean of him to contact you that night, just hours before being someone else’s.
But you still couldn’t hung up, something held you back.
Because something inside you, maybe your heart even, still wanted to talk. Still wanted to know what happened.
He cleared his throat, not knowing what to say again.
“I thought it’d really work out, you know. That you wanted it to work out.”
He didn’t say anything so you just continued.
“I thought you would keep your promise and keep in touch with me. But I was wrong.”
He took a deep breath, collecting his thoughts as he tried to make up something he’d tell you.
Was the only thing he said.
“Your sorries won’t heal the scars you left behind, you know. It won’t make it all right.”
You mumbled out, clearing your throat when you started feeling a lump in it.
“Did you call me just to say you’re sorry?”
“No, I called you to talk. Just talk like we did all the time.”
And you did talk. After some moments of silence, there were non again.
He talked about his work and business. About what he did after he left. And what he does now.
You told him about school and your relationship. About the wedding tomorrow. And about everything that was going through your mind.
“Will you have a cake with strawberries inside?”
He asked, cutting you off guard.
You couldn’t believe he remembered that.
“Yeah, I’ll have that. And a bouquet of my favorite flowers, do you still remember them?”
You didn’t expect him to, but he did.
“Of course I do. Do you remember how I bought you flowers for the first time?”
He asked and you giggle at the memory.
“We were like fifteen. And you almost cried when I gave them to you.”
Your head was thrown back as you laughed.
“You were scared I didn’t like them.”
He hummed, chuckling slightly.
And then it was silence again. Both of you realizing something.
Both of you realizing what was really happening in that moment. And what would happen tomorrow.
He cleared his throat, taking a deep breath. And then another deep breath.
“I sometimes think about what would be now if I wasn’t a total idiot.”
He mumbled out and you softly chuckled at his words, not saying anything so he could talk more.
“I really wish I’d be the one, seeing you in white tomorrow.”
“You’ll see me in white if you come.”
You said and he chuckled dryly with no humor behind it.
“Yeah. But you won’t be wearing white for me.”
You bit your lip at his words, feeling lump in your throat. Tears threatening your eyes as you looked into the distance.
“Is it toxic of me to wish it was for you?”
The words that left your lips weren’t pretty, weren’t fair. And you knew it.
But you couldn’t stop yourself from saying them.
He said, the old nickname made your tears spill, reminding you of what could’ve been.
“Maybe if we wish hard enough, it’ll happen.”
He whispered, making you think for a moment.
Not just for a moment. You started thinking about it, not saying anything.
And he thought too, keeping quiet.
It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence. Just two young people, thinking about what to do next.
And knowing there was no chance for them to be together.
You cleared your throat, preparing yourself to say your next words.
You started with your voice soft and quiet. So quiet that he almost didn’t hear you.
“Maybe it was you and me..”
He didn’t interrupt you, because he knew you needed to tell him your thoughts. And what was really going through your mind.
Because hey, it was maybe the last time you’d be talking to each other.
“Maybe in that life we did all the things we said we would.”
He exhaled at those words, feeling his own eyes tearing up slightly.
You tried to wipe your cheeks, but more tears fell so it wasn’t worth the try.
“Maybe this life is the only chance for us to do all those things, baby.”
He mumbled out, making more tears spill onto your cheeks.
As they burned their way down your face, you shook your head.
And he smiled sadly, because both of you knew the truth.
He said softly, making more tears fall down your face.
“But if another life will give us a chance, I promise to find you,”
His voice broke slightly.
“And see you in white for me and only me.”
Yep, it’s another angst. Sorryyyy.
I love ‘right person, wrong time’ trope. And you know I love angst.
I’m thinking about doing pt2, because I love you and don’t want you to suffer.
Anyway let me know if I should do pt2, or not.
