A change that will never be good- a rant on the fashion industry
My fashion history professor made such a good point the other day in class....one that I just cant stop thinking about. She mentioned that fashion used to be a form of art, and that sadly, it has turned more into just a business. I cant help but agree! there are so many people in my major who simply look at whatever kim kardashian is wearing on this week's episode of Keeping up with the kardashians, and they end up knocking that off, sketching it and handing it in as thier fahion art homework for the week. Not that kim or other beautiful celebrities necessarily dress BAD or anything....it's just that.....they wear whatever can be mass produced at a high price..... It truely breaks my heart that clothes are simply becoming these inanimate objects with no soul or spirit, like they used to have. today, all most designers care about is making the most generic and safe garment that will sell by the truckload. I firmly believe that clothes never should be just clothes....they're so much more than that. They're a conversation starter, something that can bring your senses back to a certain wonderful (or bad) memory, a way to express oneself, a form of media that takes you away from the monotonous babble of a book, song, movie, painting or television show. They can take us back in time, and tell us a bit about what the world was going through or is currently going through. They can even conjure up as much emotion as any other form of media, if not more. On the note of emotions....i will never forget the first time i cried over fashion. As i made my way through the dark entrance way of the fit museum, i was so overwhelmed by the beauty around me that i began to cry tears of joy. i had always loved fashion but never in a million years did I really understand what it meant to be a fashion designer. It was at that moment that I knew the depth of the job description. From that moment on, i knew there was so much to it besides just having a good sense of style.....it's was morso what story you had to tell.....how much passion you have for it.....and understanding that they were wearable works of art. It breaks my heart more than i could ever imagine it doing so. it's just so hard to believe that my clothes may never be celebrated simply because maybe they're not generic enough. They're something that we wear every day. they're there when we go to school, when we sit around eating ice cream, when we go on our first date, when we get our first kiss, when we find ourselves in that moment where we find "the one", and they'll still be on you and there for you when you find yourself standing across from that someone on your wedding day. You'll never forget that outfit you wore when you scored your first full time job, or that favorite sweater that got barfed on when attempted to burp your baby. bottom line is that clothes really do play such a bigger role that just covering our bodies. they're pieces of a photo album. To those who still think clothes are just clothes......all i have to say is that you truly are ignorant. you are missing out on a truly unique form of media and self expression. Someday, you'll be a few feet underground, getting eaten by worms, and everyone will have long forgotten you.....but the clothes you were privileged to wear will be hanging in a museum (if they were kept in good condition, of course) Call me a dreamer.....but i do think there's hope that the true meaning of fashion design will return to the world once again
