it all starts somewhere...

In 2009, I started thumbing through dusty crates at thrift stores and pawn shops around the valley for old beat-up records to use as wall art in my bedroom. It didn’t take long though before I invested a deep interest in the culture surrounding vinyl and record collecting. It also lead me to ask why so many have turned to the format as opposed to the various digital streaming services offered in the modern age.  

My first experience with listening to vinyl came from borrowing my stepdad’s home theatre to use my first turntable. From that point on it was my goal to have something similar when I grew up so that I could experience the same concert-like effect at my own leisure. Between purchasing, selling and trading multiple components over the years, it’s been a rhythmic quest for the perfect audio experience that hasn’t just yet finished its course. 

I’ve been asked by most of my friends and family why I care so much about an otherwise dead format. While many folks have described a warmth or depth to vinyl that doesn’t translate as well within compressed music formats (i.e. MP3, Streaming, CD), as a musician and huge music nerd, it took upgrading to an audiophile level stylus on my turntable to audibly hear --and physically feel--the difference in sound quality between the three different formats on the same system. Upon making the switch and finally upgrading to the right gear, my primary reason for collecting has solely rested upon owning the music that changed or positively influenced my life and hearing it the way it was meant to be heard: uncompressed.

I’m going to use this blog to talk about my passion for collecting, share some old favourites within the stacks and provide insightful resources for new collectors.

As I sit here typing this out, I’m looking at the vinyl records that currently sit on mine and my girlfriend’s shelf in our living room. In the last 6-8 years alone I’ve amassed over 300 records and what started as a hobby years ago has now turned into a harbouring obsession to own every record that’s spoken to me in some way played out over 33&1/3 or 45 rotations per minute --depending on what you pull off the shelf.
