It had been stupid, getting in the way. He was older, stronger, and, on top of that, she barely knew him. But it didn’t change the fact that he been kind to her and that was something she didn’t get a lot of. Too many people disliked her old man and were perfectly happy to take it out on her. But not him. So she taken the hit, whatever it was, and everything had gone...numb. At least it didn’t hurt, she supposed, but maybe this was worse.
“Doesn’t hurt,” she whispered, barely moving her lips as she tried to focus on him.
