September 18, 2022 - Violaceous Jay (Cyanocorax violaceus)
Found in parts of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela these jays live in a variety of open habitats, often near rivers and lakes. Foraging in flocks, they eat fruit, insects, the eggs of reptiles and birds, and small lizards, picking their prey from branches. Though not many of their nests have been observed, they likely build bulky nests in trees from large twigs with a lining of fine plant fibers where females lay clutches of five eggs.
Violaceous Jay
the violaceous jay is an unusually colored member of the corvid family. native to forests of south america, the violaceous jay has a black ‘hood’ and neck, with violet coloration on the wings and back and a lighter purple chest. these jays live in typically noisy flocks and forage for fruits, insects, eggs, and small lizards.
