I was seriously shocked when I went to Tumblr and saw how small/inactive the fandom is
It really is odd. Obviously there are plenty of tiny fandoms out there, but on paper there are lots of things that should result in something more substantial: It’s a comic book show, it’s related to X-Men (not a small fandom), it’s got a great villain, Dan Stevens is a great lead, the show (for all its faults) is very visually creative. And there’s a good balance of quality and flaws, which fandom usually likes.
But the show also went out of its way to alienate the viewers from the characters, especially in season 2. It refused to allow characters and relationships to develop, instead wandering off on lecturing tangents that were at best only lightly relevant to the story, and throwing out “twists” that were unearned. And NH didn’t read the room and decided to overwhelmingly focus on the fact that all three of the main leads have, in some way, raped someone. A lot of people did not want to stick around for that, and I totally understand why.
I think the lack of character interaction was the killer. Fandom is fine with weird shit and dubious morality. But Fandom lives for character interaction and Legion starved its audience of it, and actively sabotaged pretty much every single relationship aside from the Loudermilks (who remain fan favorites in part because they actually cared about each other and showed it). Even NH himself knew that without Syd/David, people wouldn’t stick around, because we need a human connection and someone to root for/care about. And he was correct.
Okay but listen to the song "All These Things That I've Done" by the Killers while thinking about David and try not to get overwhelmed. If you have not already done so, it's a necessity.
That is so very David! Great song.
