Watched âGirl in the Pictureâ tonight. Lots of twists and turns. Also a bit more victim blaming than I wouldâve cared for... any victim blaming is more than Iâd like. Â
The woman who adopted the daughter of the victim recalls them meeting alone in the hospital room after the daughter is born. The woman was like, âWe were alone, why didnât she tell me what was going on? I couldâve helped her.â Well, she had been abducted, held captive, and sexually/psychologically/physically abused by the man for over a decade. Sheâd also just given birth. She was probably not going to be in the head space to think clearly enough to attempt to save herself from that situation.Â
At the end of the documentary one of the victimâs friends said she blamed the victimâs mother for not doing more to find her. She said sheâd been kidnapped/abducted as a child and her mom did a better job advocating for her search and rescue. Good for you, maâam, but every situation is different. A lot of things went wrong that allowed for the victim to end up in the situation she did. Letâs not blame her poor mother for things out of her control.Â
Do better people. Donât blame victims of abuse and violence for not saving themselves. There are so many factors that were out of her control and Iâm sure had been mentally broken down after years and years. It is amazing when these victims are able to find ways to save themselves from dire situations, but Iâd imagine those are the special and rare cases.Â
