Hey guys! It's cool to answer this biblically. So. I live 2000kms from home. I'm 20, it's my first time living away from home. I left my therapist and my entire support network to move here for a job that I don't super love. Met awesome friends, see my therapist when I visit home. Homesickness causes downward spirals unfortunately. Any advice on avoiding slumps? I make plans, play a team sport, eat mostly okay, take my meds, call my family often, and sleep. But I'm still sad.Any thoughts? Thank
Hey, sorry about the late response; finals season approaches, so school is getting a bit busy.
One thing that’s pretty common following a major change that might be happening is looking at old circumstances through rose-colored lenses; it can be hard when you’re in a new situation to not look at how things used to be and say “I want to go back.” No situation is ever perfect, but when you’re somewhere new and missing home, it can be easier to ignore the harder parts of how things used to be and only see where the new situation is causing you problems. So, as much as possible, try not to compare how things were to how things are. Where you are now is always going to have brand new good and bad aspects to it, and comparing it to anything else is going to be like apples and oranges.
But, mostly it sounds to me like you are doing all of the right things in trying to avoid slumps. Unfortunately, you can be doing everything right and still just need time to adjust to major changes in your life. It is entirely possible that what you’re feeling will lessen as you get more used to living in your new city.
Since you said it was okay to post it publicly, the post is also open to followers, so check the notes to see if any have left more suggestions for you.
I hope you feel better soon
