Actually yeah you know what? Jayce is the dumbest person in all of Arcane and I will commit to this.
Viktor is on deaths door twice in the series and both times Jayce freaks out and sits with him at least for a while. So I'm confused.
Major spoilers for the finale, but mage Viktor tells him cult Viktor can be saved. Must be saved, in fact. Only you can show me this. Implying he needs to be shown, must be shown. Can Be Saved. Implying that defeating him is not the way to save the city.
What does Jayce do? He staggers out of the arcane and blasts Viktor in the chest! Why? Isn't that his friend? Didn't he just get proof he could save him? Is he thinking, 'but maybe I can stop this now?' Instead of talking? Its just... wrong. It's wrong. I know Viktor/Salo in the Hexcore sounds unhinged. I recognise that Jayce doesn't know how far gone he was.
But that's the thing: He Doesn't Know.
And i don't think I'm imagining it; Viktor seemed a lot more save-able in 2.06 then he is afterwards. I admit I can't figure out if his followers were mind-dead at this point. But he refuses the Doctor with Vander. He did seem to be genuinely trying to help Vander. I understand now. I assumed at the time that he thought all his efforts had always been doomed as he died but I understand now that this was him going over the edge. Pushed to the most extreme.... by Jayce.
I suppose I can accept that Jayce was going through some shit, but the cruelty there is beyond me. Shooting his friend, his partner, in the chest when there's an option to save him.
