Lol I think your autocorrect changed Hydron to Hydrogen that's so funny regrettably I think the person who can't handle spice very well is Hydron. . .he'll try anything once, and if it's spicy and he likes it, he'll still eat it he'll just be sniffling the whole time (you know how spices clear your sinuses lmao). if it's spicy and he doesn't like it. . .//sobs Shun and Dan are both used to spicy food; Shun is the first to tap out on account of tummy issues. Dan will eat his weight in spicy food and be totally fine afterwards. Hydron is nursing ice cream to cope with one (1) plate of curry chicken and Shun is pouting b/c he had to lay off the wasabi half an hour ago so his stomach would stop screaming at him.

Three days after defeating King Zenoheld and destroying the Alternative and the Vestals returning home to Vestal, Shun is convinced he's being haunted. 

He's never been the superstitious type, though he's never discredited the idea of the supernatural - after all, three years ago, cards fell out of the sky, and extradimensional creatures emerged from those cards, and he and his friends not only befriended said extradimensional creatures but also helped save their dimension and Earth for good measure. This year, he'd fallen into a wormhole and befriended aliens, saved the Bakugan's homeworld again - twice - and destroyed what was basically the Space Colony ARK. Turns out all sorts of weird shit was real and possible and could reasonably happen, so why not ghosts?

A ghost. Singular. He thinks. He's ninety-nine percent sure. That last one percent is because he's always been a bit of a skeptic, despite his rationalization of the situation by way of extradimensional beings and aliens and alien spaceship superweapons.

He doesn't think it's Zenoheld. The only person who'd make sense for Zenoheld to haunt is Spectra, probably. Ironically even. 

He doesn't think it's his mom, either, even though. . .it'd be nice if it was. He'd just - he'd like to see her again. Just for a moment. But he knows his mom - the kind of person she is - and his mom definitely didn't die mad enough to throw things sometimes, or slam and rattle the doors, or jumpscare his grandpa.

His grandfather has taken up Shinto prayer and talismans again. Shun isn't sure it's working.

Whoever the ghost is, it's mostly lonely, he thinks. Or stalking him, specifically, but the reason he thinks it isn't is because it leaves him alone sometimes. And it never follows him into the bathroom. Considerate of it, all things - well - considered.

Shun has lived in the Kazami clan's dojo since he was eight years old and his mom started getting too sick to continue working. The dojo is large and drafty - the building dates back to the Meiji Era of Japan and while it's been updated with modern amenities since long before he was born, modern HVAC can't heat a house this big very well. Shun knows every inch of the house (except his grandpa's room), and he knows where all the normal cold spots are.

So the cold spot following him around his house was his first indication. The cold spot following him to school a few times was enough for him to decide maybe he should confide in someone.

He makes a group chat with Dan and Alice. Dan because he's Shun's best friend (because Shun loves him and wants to share everything with him), and Alice because she's the most likely person to actually believe him. Not that Dan wouldn't believe him, but he's aware that it sounds a little crazy. Again, rationalizations exist, but again: ghosts?

Shun: [You may be wondering why I've brought you both here.]

Shun: [I'm being haunted by a ghost.]

Shun: [No, this is not a prank.]

Dan: [haha holy shit fr fr?]

Shun: [I'm deadly serious.]

Alice: [interesting. what makes you think you're being haunted?]

Shun: [First of all, I KNOW I'm being haunted.]

Shun: [There's a cold spot following me around. Not all the time, sometimes it goes away for a while and shows up again later. It followed me to school and lingered the whole day. The only place it doesn't follow me is the bathroom.]

Dan: [dude ur house is cold as BALLS]

Shun: [I know where all the cold spots are, Daniel Linh Kuso.]

Dan: [oh fuck my full name im in the doghouse now]

Shun: [Woof.]

Alice: [you two are so cute when you flirt >: 3c]

Shun: [ALICE.]

A flash of light flickers just outside of Shun’s vision - and if anybody saw him jump, no they fucking didn’t. He whirls around to see Alice stepping out of a portal, oujia board box, candles and sticks of incense bundled in her arms, Masquerade’s teleportation card held between her fingers. She grins at him.

“I saw you jump,” she teases in her thick Russian accent. “Ha ha, I scared you.”

“No you didn’t,” Shun squints at her. “What’s all that for?”

“If we are doing this, we are doing this properly,” Alice rolls her eyes. “No shortcuts, da?”

Shun glances at his phone to see Dan blowing up their group chat, crowing victory about ‘finally imparting internet lingo to Shun that’s my boy that’s my BOY’. He calls Dan.

“Alice is already here,” he says. “She teleported in.”

“What?!” Dan screeches. “Wait for me!!! I’m on my way, I'll be there in five!!”

 “Hi Dan,” Alice greets cheerfully.

“HI ALICE!!!”

“You don’t have to scream, she’s right here.”

“Joke’s on you, I always have to scream. I’ll do it again right now, ready, AAA-”

Shun ends the call, shaking his head. 

“Idiot,” he grins affectionately at the blurry flip phone photo of Dan that’s his caller ID, flipping his phone closed and slipping it in his pocket. 

The ghost, which has been hovering by his shoulder and presumably reading his text messages (fair enough, Shun would probably want to know what people were saying about him if he was dead, too), finally moves away. Presumably to check out Alice and her whole deal, based on her delighted shiver and widening grin.

“We should set up the board,” she says. “Which is least drafty room in your house?”

“The library,” Shun replies. “This way.”

“Come ghost!” Alice chirps, following him out of his room. “We find out who or what you are in record time!”

“And we hopefully don’t die horrible bloody deaths.”

“And no killing, please, ghost!”

True to his word, Dan barrels into the library five minutes after Shun hung up on him, just as Shun and Alice have finished setting up the candles. He’s panting and his hair is a mess, but he’s grinning wildly at them. Shun raises his eyebrows.

“Did you run all the way here?” he asks.

“Biked,” Dan replies breathlessly, stooping over with his hands on his knees. “Whoo! Almost got caught in a trap outside too.”

“See?” Shun gestures at him, glancing at Alice. “Soon-to-be-dead.”

“Don’t manifest that, man, c’mon,” Dan complains, dropping down to sit on the floor in front of the ouija board. “I'm too young to die at the hands of your stalker ghost.”

“But not too young to die in a trip wire trap in the woods outside of my house?” Shun raises his eyebrows, moving to shut the library door as Alice shutters the windows, plunging the room into near darkness. Dan, being Dan, pulls a lighter from his pocket, flicking it open and lighting the nearest candles.

“I'm too young for that too,” he says.

Alice takes the lighter to light the candles he can't reach, and then the incense stick. “Shun, close the AC vent,” she says, settling to Dan's left. “Do we have fire extinguisher nearby?”

Shun climbs precariously onto a reading chair to reach the vent, closing it. “It's in the kitchen.” he informs her, then ducks out of the room and dashes there and back, setting it next to the door as he closes it again. The candles flicker in the delayed rush of wind from his departure and return.

He sits down on Dan's right, knees folded underneath him in proper Japanese style, and looks expectantly at Alice. “Well?”

“Yes, yes,” Alice grins, setting the planchette in the center of the board. “Normally, the planchette moves because of the ideometer effect, small unconscious movements by the people touching it. But if Shun's ghost is real and willing, they will move the planchette and we should be able to tell the difference. That’s why this side is open,” she gestures towards the empty space to her left, at the head of the board, “because it will be obvious if something pulls from the side where no one sits.”

“Aight, fair enough,” Dan shrugs. The three of them lean forward, almost simultaneously, and place two fingers on the planchette.

“Well,” Alice hums, “is there anyone here that would like to speak with us?”

Hydron stares at the three humans with the most incredulous look on his face that he can muster, and thinks to himself, ‘This is ridiculous. There’s no way this will work.’

He’s been invisible and incorporeal for days now. When he manages to actually touch or move something, it’s an accident probably seventy-five percent of the time. Purposefully trying to touch or move something gives him a headache more often than not - he didn’t even think ghosts could get headaches until he became a ghost and got one. He’s attempted to become visible to no avail and more head pain. So there’s no way, no way this stupid-looking - is that a board game? - is going to allow him to communicate with these dumb, dumb humans.

But he’s going crazy not being able to talk to anyone besides himself. So, even though it’s not going to work, he steps around the candles and drops down to sit cross-legged on the floor (ew) in the empty space in front of the board. The candles flicker with his movements, drawing the humans’ attention, and Dan shifts restlessly, grin widening.

Hydron frowns, places a hand on the planchette, and shoves it completely off the board, not expecting to actually be able to do so.

Oh.

Oh.

“Oh fuck-!”

“Shit-!”

“No way-!”

Ohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuck-

Hydron stares at the planchette, then picks it up and places it back on the board, eyes wide and disbelieving. Alice’s grin turns manic, and she laughs, saying something in a rough-sounding language he can’t understand. Dan and Shun chatter in Shun’s language too fast for Hydron to catch some of the words he’s been learning from sheer boredom; they both look pale, excited and frightened all at once.

Hydron very tentatively asks, “Can you three hear me?” out loud. When nobody replies, he moves the planchette - the humans all quiet down, staring at the board with wide eyes.

CAN YOU SEE ME?

“Oh, it speaks English,” Shun says, “good. Uh, no, we can’t.”

Hydron frowns. HE. NOT IT.

“It’s not your mom,” Dan informs Shun, reaching over to pat his shoulder with. . .sympathy? “Sorry, he isn’t your mom.”

Shun’s mom? Did they mean the raven-haired woman with the green eyes that lingered in Shun’s room when he slept? The woman in all of Shun’s childhood pictures? Should he. . .say something about that or. . .?

“Do not be rude,” Alice chides, “Do you have a name?”

Hydron hesitates. YES.

“Will you tell us?” Shun leans forward, eyes wide.

NO.

“Why not?” Dan asks.

Hydron scoffs. Like hell is he telling them who he is - if their not-so-silly human-ghost communication ritual works, maybe their ridiculous looking ghost exorcism rituals will. They’ll just get rid of him and he - he doesn’t want to die.

Er - he doesn’t want to die again. He’s kind of already dead.

WE ARE NOT FRIENDS.

“Uh. . .so if we were friends you would tell us?” Dan tilts his head.

“Okay, please tell me you’re not Zenoheld,” Shun frowns.

NO. NO. NO.

Hydron couldn’t stress that enough.

“But you know who Zenoheld is?” Alice frowns, narrowing her eyes in his direction. “. . .Are you one of the Vexos? Lync?”

Oh, fuck. He remembers where he’s seen this girl before. Lync had left to bring her the Alternative data, and he killed Lync right outside her house. 

Great. Just great. The humans eye his spot with suspicion the longer Hydron hesitates to answer; just because they can’t see him, doesn’t mean he can’t feel the weight of their stares boring into him. He could lie, pretend to be Lync, but if Lync was going to haunt anyone, it’d be Alice, not Shun.

NOT LYNC.

“Mylene? Shadow?” Dan suggests. Hydron scoffs, stomach twisting uncomfortably. All he knew was that they’d disappeared - he didn’t think they were dead. All of the Vexos, dead, except Spectra and Gus - and two of them at his own hands. 

NO. NO.

Shun folds his arms across his chest, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth, brows furrowed. Hydron only belatedly remembers to be wary of him - he’s been observing Shun for the past three days since the Alternative blew up and killed him and he followed the humans to Earth, having no desire to haunt Vestal where people could actually see him. Shun, in addition to being attractive and intelligent and level-headed, is far too damn perceptive. Almost as soon as Hydron chose to follow him around, Shun sensed him.

He couldn’t see or hear Hydron, but Shun knew he was there.

“Prince Hydron,” Shun says, cautious and somber. “That’s who you are. I should have known - you were killed in the explosion.”

Hydron stares at the planchette. He moves it.

YES.

The three humans exchange concerned looks, and Shun asks, “Why are you haunting me?”

Maybe if he’s honest, they won’t try to get rid of him. This stupid fucking board is an awful way to have a conversation, though. If they would just bring him a pen and some paper - though it’s not like he hasn’t tried writing messages before. Still, maybe it’ll work this time?

GIVE ME PAPER AND PEN THIS IS AWFUL. “Nooooo way,” Dan says, shaking his head. “You’re not getting stuff you could stab someone with, not on my watch. I’ve seen too many horror movies to know how a ghost with a pen works out.” NOT GOING TO KILL YOU STUPID HUMAN. “That is not very nice,” Alice scolds. “Considering circumstances, you understand why we don’t trust you, da?”

YOU SAID NO KILLING YOU DID NOT HEAR BUT I SAID OKAY NO KILLING STUPID HUMANS THIS SUCKS AND IS SLOW AND IS STUPID.

“Answer my question, first,” Shun frowns stubbornly.

Hydron throws the planchette at him. Shun’s hand is a barely perceptible blur as it snaps up to catch it inches from his face. Hydron makes a frustrated noise, kicking at the board as he stands.

“Oh, you want an answer, do you?” he rants. “I’ll just convey it in a manner that’s expedient and succinct with a board game!!! Yes, that makes perfect sense and will please everyone and will make it so you don’t want to kill me permanently because I can’t communicate effectively! Oh! Oh, you make me wish I had just let my father destroy this stupid planet! You make me wish I could do more than just slam doors and throw things!”

He doesn’t notice Shun’s eyes widen in surprise, all three humans’ eyes locking onto him with more focus than before like they can see him.

“What do you want me to say? Hmm? I didn’t expect to be a ghost? I didn’t want to go back to Vestal? You were the least annoying human I could have followed? I’m bored? I’m lonely? I’ll just use this stupid thing to write all of that for the next three hours!”

“Um,” Dan says. “Uh. We can. See you, kinda? And hear you?”

“Oh, shut up!” Hydron snaps, storming past him and slamming the door open, frustration boiling in his gut. He picks a direction, phasing through walls and knocking things over just to be petty. He keeps up the antics long after Alice and Dan leave, easily avoiding Shun’s attempts to find him and ignoring his increasingly annoyed requests for Hydron to stop breaking everything.

It’s only when Shun finally goes to bed that he finds a notebook on the desk, flipped open to a page with a message in neat, even handwriting and a pen set beside it.

You can stay, if you really want to. But if you don’t mind, please stop scaring my grandfather. He’s old and I worry enough about his health already. He’s the only family I have left.

You can use this to write to me until we figure out how you became visible and audible like before. I don’t think you realized that it happened. In any case, this is better than nothing, right?

For what it’s worth. I’m sorry this happened to you. Despite everything you did, I don’t believe you deserved to die.

Write me back if you want. I’ll check this in the morning.

Hydron stares at the message, a lump in his throat. Out of all the things he expected Shun to say to him, ‘I don’t believe you deserved to die’ didn’t even make the list.

He reaches for the pen, holding a breath he doesn’t need to breathe. Condensation forms on the plastic where his fingers touch it.

He starts to write back.

Gender Headcanon: Formally I don't think Bakugan have genders? I think their gendered pronouns are a result of whatever funky magic allows them to communicate with humans/Vestals/Neathians/Gundalians despite all four alien species having different languages. Assigned he/him by universal translator.

A NOTP I have with said character: In memory of recent AO3 comments from like two weeks ago (or something like that), Drago/Dan. Look, ship and let ship or whatever, I don't care what some people are into, but in MY opinion that's his son. That's his human son, okay. Emphasis on the NO in NOTP.

A random headcanon: Drago and Miyoko Kuso get along really well, to the point where he has confided in her about missing Wyvern and his regret that he couldn't save her. They like to listen to podcasts and audiobooks together while Miyoko does chores and cooking.

General Opinion over said character: I never know what to do with the Bakugan either when writing, even though I do think about them. I wish Drago didn't go through so many evolution designs even though I know why he did (toy anime, corporate greed). Peak Drago design was Neo Dragonoid. My sexuality headcanons for both of them

Alice is a lesbian, Runo is bisexual and was deeply in the closet about it (some internalized homophobia there that I really want to write about)

3. What did their first date look like? (unless canon has showed that)

Well, since Alice kept that card that lets her teleport anywhere she wants, they don't have to deal with being long-distance. She takes Runo on a picnic at one of the best places to go stargazing and see the northern lights, featuring lots of warm food that she made herself and a giant thermos full of hot chocolate. There's also a jumbo sized sleeping bag that Alice insists they share to stay warm while they stargaze (in addition to making sure Runo is properly bundled up to protect against the Russian cold).

7. What do they wear to a pride parade?

Runo is going full rainbow decora kei!! Something like this:

Alice is a little more subdued only in terms of spectacle since she's not into Harajuku fashion trends like Runo is. She's wearing overalls hand-painted with the lesbian flag over a fishnet top and sports bra.
