So a preface: in keeping with being a D&D AU, the Bakugan don't exist as Bakugan, but they do exist as companions, mentors, patrons, gods, etc.
Also, none of the humans are humans - since there's an elemental aspect, I thought it'd be more fun if the main Brawlers were plane-touched species, which can look humanoid while still having elemental powers. Plane-touched are unique in that they can be born to humanoid parents several generations removed from their planar ancestors or they can be from a long line of plane-touched.
I made the character sheets at 10th level, since it's a good representation of each character's skillset, and I used standard array (8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16) for their base ability scores. Breakdown below!
Species -
Alice is an aasimar, a plane-touched species either descended from a Celestial or blessed by the Upper Planes in some way. Aasimar come in three varieties: Protector, Scourge, and Fallen. To fit with her role as the Darkus brawler and contrast against Runo, I chose the fallen aasimar which is based on the idea of the fallen angel. Aasimar are born with celestial guides who watch over and advise them throughout their life - Alice's guide is Hydranoid, a manifestation of void that watches from the space between the stars of the Hydra constellation. When she takes her angelic form, called the Necrotic Shroud, a faint impression of Hydranoid can be seen in the skeletal expanse of her wings.
Her Necrotic Shroud can be activated as a bonus action; when this occurs, creatures within 10 feet of her other than her allies must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of her until the end of her next turn (they have disadvantage on attack rolls while she is within line of sight, and they can't willingly move closer to her). This transformation lasts for 1 minute or until she ends it as a bonus action; during this time, she can deal extra necrotic damage equal to her level once per turn when she deals damage with an attack or a spell.
She's still a sweetie, but she's a scary one just by virtue of her connection to Hydranoid's power.
She can cast the Light cantrip (action, makes an object glow like a torch for 1 hour), she has resistance to necrotic and radiant damage, and she can, once per long rest, restore HP equal to her level to a creature she can touch. She also has darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Alice speaks Common and Celestial, the language of celestial creatures from the Upper Planes. Her aasimar species bonuses went into Strength and Constitution.
Background -
Her background is the Haunted One, a horror-themed background that I chose to represent her connection to Masquerade (in addition to a Dark Gift from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft). At some point during her youth, her grandfather accidentally summoned the eldritch dragon Naga from the Far Realm, which exists outside of the planar system. The negative energy released by the summoning suffused Alice - and she became very ill as her innate celestial magic and the negative eldritch energy warred in her body. She would have died, but Hydranoid used his power to siphon most of the eldritch power into the form of a mask. What remained wouldn't allow her to part with the mask - it remained dormant, slowly forming a mind and personality separate to Alice's. The name of this personality? Masquerade.
Masquerade is represented by a Dark Gift called Second Skin. It can be triggered at will by equipping the mask, or involuntarily, if Alice reaches less than half her HP and fails a Charisma saving throw or if she is unconscious; either way, it allows her to cast the spell Alter Self using the Change Appearance option without using a spell slot, once per long rest (if voluntary). She can also cast Alter Self normally by using 2nd level spell slots. Masquerade cannot exist without Alice, so he cannot allow her to die; but he also has his own agenda, and Alice is unable to resist having her consciousness taken over while unconscious. Alice is hesitant to use her Necrotic Shroud and some of her more aggressive spells - Masquerade relishes in his connection to Hydranoid, and doesn't hesitate to get nasty with the spellcasting.
The Haunted One background grants Alice and Masquerade proficiency with Arcana and Religion. Alice studied Primordial on her own in order to communicate more comfortably with her elemental plane-touched friends. Deep Speech is the language of the Far Realm, and thus Masquerade's primary language. It also gives her the option of taking a Monster Hunter's pack for standard equipment (filled with your usual: wooden stakes, holy water, a holy amulet, a mirror, manacles, oil, etc); I do headcanon Alice with an interest in the occult so I thought she could have monster hunter equipment as a treat.
Class -
Michael Gehabich is a renowned planar scientist and conjuration wizard whom Alice looks up to and always wanted to emulate. She became his wizard apprentice, though she decided not to follow his footsteps in the field of Conjuration and instead specialized in the School of Graviturgy.
Graviturgy is the arcane study and manipulation of the forces of gravity. The first thing she learned to do (at 2nd level) was manipulate the weight of objects and creatures using Adjust Density, doubling or halving their weight as long as she maintains concentration (as if casting a spell). A creature whose weight is halved has its speed increased by 10 feet, its jump distance doubled, and disadvantage on Strength checks and saving throws. A creature whose weight is doubled has its speed decreased by 10 feet and advantage on Strength checks and saving throws. As a 10th level wizard, she can affect creatures and objects that are size category Huge or smaller. At 6th level, she can use Gravity Well to move a creature that she's targeted with a spell 5 feet in any direction if they A) are willing to move, B) are hit with her spell attack, or C) fail a saving throw against her spell. Her 10th level ability is Violent Attraction, something she can use a number of times equal to her Intelligence modifier; it allows her to use her reaction to increase the damage dealt by a creature's weapon attack that she can see within 60 feet, or increase the fall damage taken by a falling creature within 60 feet - basically manipulating the mass of a weapon to make it hit harder and the gravity on a creature to make them land harder. (All three of these ability names sound like Darkus Ability Cards - with 14th level Event Horizon completing the set).
Alice and Masquerade's highest ability scores went into Intelligence and Charisma. Her Strength, Constitution, and Wisdom scores are moderate (thanks in part to her species bonus & 8th level Ability Score Improvement), and her lowest stat is Dexterity. For her 4th level Ability Score Improvement, I gave her the War Caster feat, and her 8th level ASI went into Strength and Intelligence. Strength isn't really important for wizards, but I subscribe to Alice & Masquerade being buff.
War Caster gives Alice advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration on spells when she takes damage. She can perform somatic (gesture) components of spells even with her hands occupied with weapons or shields, and when a creature's movement would provoke an opportunity attack from her, she can use her reaction to cast a spell or cantrip with a casting time of 1 action on that creature instead. This synergizes well with her spell list since most of the spells I chose for her are either concentration spells or reaction spells.
Now we get to talk about the wizard's spellbook, which Alice uses to study and cast spells. Wizard spells are weird - basically, Alice has a spellbook with a big list of spells in it, but she can only prepare a certain amount of spells per day. At 10th level, she has 24 spells in her spellbook, but she can only prepare 13 spells per day (equal to her Intelligence modifier + her Wizard level). Any spell in her spellbook that has the Ritual tag does not need to be prepared for her to be able to cast it as a ritual. Cantrips aren't included in the spells she knows or can prepare, but with the optional Cantrip Formulas feature, she can swap a wizard cantrip she knows for a different wizard cantrip whenever she takes a long rest. I filled her spell list with a mixture of Graviturgy/Chronurgy spells and spells from the folk horror Crooked Moon setting.
Cantrips - Dissolution (action, deals force damage and reduces AC by 1) / Mending (1 minute, mends small breaks or tears) / Message (action, whisper a message to a creature within 120 ft & receive reply) / Sapping Sting (action, target takes necrotic damage & falls prone) / Toll the Dead (action, target takes necrotic damage - damage increases if target is already missing HP)
1st LVL - Pacify Person (action, concentration 1 minute, pacifies creature & prevents them from attacking) / Silvery Barbs (reaction, inflicts disadvantage on a roll for a creature within 60 feet, Alice can give a different creature within range advantage) / Magnify Gravity (action, 10-foot radius sphere deals force damage/halves speed) / Swallow Magic (reaction when a spell fails to affect her, she can 1) regain HP, B) increase her speed, OR C) add a d4 to a skill check) / Mage Armor (action, Armor Class = 13 + her Dexterity modifier) / Thunderwave (action, 15 ft square thunder damage, pushes 10 feet away from caster) / Witch Bolt (action, concentration 1 minute, deals lightning damage to target; can use action on subsequent turns to continue dealing lightning damage) / False Life (action; gives temp HP for 1 hour)
2nd LVL - Vortex Warp (action; teleport willing creature up to 90 feet, unwilling creature if it fails a Constitution save) / Darkness (action, concentration 10 minutes, 15-ft radius sphere magical darkness) / Shadow Blade (bonus action, concentration 1 minute, summons sword of gloom that does psychic damage, attacks have advantage in dim light/darkness) / Chorus of the Lost (action, concentration 1 minute, 15-ft radius sphere deals psychic damage & inflicts frightened) / Gentle Repose (action/ritual, prevents target body from decaying/being raised as undead) / Wither and Bloom (action, 10-ft radius sphere, deals necrotic damage, heals allies within AOE)
3rd LVL - Isolation (action, concentration 1 minute, makes creature perceive all others as invisible even if it would normally be able to see them, cannot identify sources of injury) / Remove Curse (action, removes all curses affecting a creature or object, breaks attunement to cursed objects) / Speak with Dead (action, ask a body 5 questions)
4th LVL - Backlash (reaction when Alice takes damage, reduces damage taken & reflects damage back on attacker) / Sanctum of the Shepherd (1 minute, 20-ft radius sphere gives +1 AC to creatures that finish a long rest in AOE) / Arcane Eye (action, concentration 1 hour, magical invisible eye sensor for spying) / Dimension Door (action, teleport herself + one other creature up to 500 feet) / Sickening Radiance (action, concentration 10 minutes, 30ft radius sphere, deals radiant damage + inflicts levels of exhaustion) / Phantasmal Killer (action, concentration 1 minute, deals psychic damage per turn + inflicts frightened)
5th LVL - Temporal Shunt (reaction when a creature within 120 ft attacks or casts a spell, yeets target into the time stream and causes their attack to miss or spell to fail)
Alice's most common prepared spell list would look like this:
2nd LVL: Vortex Warp / Darkness / Shadow Blade / Chorus of the Lost
3rd LVL: Isolation
4th LVL: Dimension Door / Sickening Radiance / Phantasmal Killer
5th LVL: Temporal Shunt
Arcane Recovery allows Alice to regain spell slots on a short rest with a combined level of up to half her wizard level. During early levels she would use this mainly to regain the spell slot used to cast Mage Armor; during later levels she gets a little more versatile use out of it (4 + 1, 1 + 1 + 3, 2 + 2 + 1, 2 + 3, 1 + 1 + 1 + 2, or just a single level 5 spell slot). Unfortunately the utility for this maxes out at level 11 wizard when she gets access to 6th level spell slots. Through her wizardly studies, Alice is proficient in Medicine and Insight. She studied the former to try to understand why she had sudden bouts of illness and memory loss after her grandfather summoned Naga (those were caused by Masquerade taking over her body), and Insight seemed fitting as she's very in tune with her emotions and the emotions of others. Conveniently, nobody ever realized Masquerade only appeared when Alice was "sick" until after the mask was broken during a confrontation between Dan and Masquerade. An eldritch, shadowy version of Hydranoid, a manifestation of the evil within Masquerade was released when this happened, and destroying it also destroyed Masquerade. . .or so everyone thought, until the next time Alice was severely injured in battle and Masquerade took over. They've learned to co-exist since then.
By the way, you bet your ass that as soon as Alice gets to 17th level and acquires 9th level wizard spells, she's taking Time Stop. Time Stop is fucking goated, look it up. Move over Wish, nobody gives a fuck about you.

it’s been a hot minute since I last drew these two together. There really isn’t enough art of them as a pair together and I think it’s tragic cause they look so good together so I’ll fill in the gaps
Sup nerds, mind if I post my treasured horde of Bakugan asset links?
First up, the lovely rips from @brian-drawing's DevantArt account
Next, ninety nine/iee-kee's rigged dance models, some used from Brian's own rips and even custom ones, they also made funny videos so check out their YouTube!

Whether you want art reffs or just want to look at these mighty monsters, then these are for you to enjoy!!
I talked to my bf about this yesterday but I kinda wish Joe was introduced a little earlier in the story and I wish we could have gotten more interactions between Joe and Alice. I keep thinking about how the two of them could have actually been great friends. Neither of them were active brawlers when the story began, Alice was known as a non-playing strategist and Joe was the webmaster… I feel like the two of them could have had a lot of great convos with eachother and bond over the fact that neither of them actually play… Plus the parallel between Joe having Wavern and (Masquerade) working under Naga is pretty good
