So during the French Revolution knowing someone who suffered the guillotine became like a really cool thing and higher class people began holding 'guillotine balls'. The attendants wore really pale makeup to look dead and red ribbons around their necks to signify the end by the guillotine. To attend you had to have a family member who was beheaded, and people began forging death certificates just to get in!
