SEND ME ♡ + A WORD, AND I’LL WRITE A HEADCANON
Robin meant a lot to Jaycie; in the moment, Robin meant everything to Jaycie. In her mind, she was this Crime Alley kid who was never supposed to amount to anything and Robin was her chance.
She doesn’t regret being Robin, even after everything that happened, but she has distanced herself from it, or tried to. Robin’s always gonna be a part of her, but she’s very much not the same person ( and when someone can’t recognize that it can make a situation go from 0 to 60 like nothing ).
Her view of her own time as Robin is pretty skewed, the bad memories have really overtaken the good, and she understands that she died on the job, in the line of duty, but she can’t completely reconcile the idea of martyrdom with herself and what happened.
If not avenging her is Bruce’s failure, in her mind, her death is hers. As much as she resents the cautionary tale she became, there’s a large part of her that has convinced her that her own failures and shortcomings led to her death, that she made herself into a victim. If she had just been able to listen to Bruce she never would have ended up in that warehouse that night.
( i also think she’s adopted a kind of view that she was always going to become something batman didn’t want her to, that he disapproved of, because she always had a violent streak that couldn’t be trained out of her and even as robin she was pushing too hard - it was destined to get worse once she wasn’t taking orders anymore )
She really gets better with all of this as more and more time goes by, and does her best to cope with what she went through, but, especially on her really bad days, she does still struggle wit self-blame over everything that happened and she doesn’t like being reminded of Robin.
In regards to the other Robins, her view of them really differs when it comes to Dick and the others. She always looked up to Dick, and though she’ll deny it to her second dying day, she does kind of see him as a brother, but as long as she feels that he looks at her and still sees Robin then their relationship is always going to be strained.
Things are different when it comes to the other Robins, the ones who came after her, because they didn’t know her before her death, they don’t have anything to compare her to, don’t have anything to look for in her. There’s no previous model for them to think of when they hear her name.
While it’s easier in that respect, it also creates problems, because they have nothing to contradict the cautionary tale she became. They only knew her as a glass case before they knew her as Red Hood, and this leaves them susceptible to the idea that she was nothing but the violent one, the impulsive one, the one that couldn’t listen and killed a guy and got killed. Beyond the throw away phrase “a good solider” there’s no real way for them to understand just how much she put into Robin
( tim’s an obvious exception here, but even though he knew a lot more than the general public, i don’t think he was close enough to fully understand everything. )
As strained as her relationship with them can be, and everything that has gone on ( she really regrets everything that happened with tim - she was angry and hurting and he got caught in the cross fire ), Jaycie would probably put herself in between a bullet and any of the three later Robins. Bruce failed her, she failed herself, and I don’t think she could let that happen to Tim, Steph, or Damian, especially if it involved the Joker.
She understands and has slowly come to accept that nothing she does will ever be able to push Bruce to the point of killing the Joker, and she is not convinced that if he had to chose between killing the Joker and letting Tim or Damian die, he would be able to make the right decision.
