Detective Comics #975
Family Meeting
Bruce: You could have died!
Dick: I wasnât hurt that badly, Alfred said all the bleeding was internal. Thatâs where the bloodâs supposed to be.
hoodedmenace:Â
âThat was the worst joke,â Jason gripes, peeking out from around the corner. The guards havenât budged from their post despite all the commotion, meaning theyâre being paid very handsomely to guard an impressive cache of drugs, also meaning heâll have to go through them instead of around them.
  âKay, Iâm goinâ in.â
Jason rolls two marble-sized smoke bombs between his fingers and then chucks them down the hall, sprinting out the moment they go off. The air goes thick, grey, and opaque, but Jason doesnât need to see to remember where the guards were standing and in what direction they were holding their rifles â he flies in knees first, body slamming the closest guard into the door and using him as a brace to kick the rifle out of the secondâs hands.Â
Jasonâs worked with Dick and Bruce long enough to know that sometimes the only point of a hired gun is to stall so that more hired guns can arrive, effectively negating the neighborhood vigilante with overwhelming force. He makes quick work of knocking them unconscious and disassembling their weapons to the point of unrecognizability, before swiping a keycard for the door.
âIâm about to blow their storage straight to shit. Please tell me everyone is fleeing in terror.â
given that jason is the reason dick had to go in so quick, he has no space to be criticizing dickâs jokes. which dick would tell him if bullets werenât raining down around him. one manages to get a lucky shot, grazes dickâs shoulder, and he hisses as he doubles back, using the guyâs shoulders as a springboard. it pushes the thug down and pushes dick up enough to get him over the crowd again. the crowd that is being very loud and very unorganized but heading towards the exits like they should be.
âterror fleeing is happening.â dick gets the words out over a sickening crunch of some goons wrist under his foot which, sorry but it had to happen eventually. the casino wasnât all that full to begin with, which is nice, and the last few people are sprinting out as dick entertains the main show in the middle of the floor.  âif this is gonna come raining down on me, i need fifteen seconds notice.â he drops from stand to almost-sit, thighs wrapped around a guyâs head. Â
he uses the momentum to tilt backwards, weight all balanced out to send the bigger man sprawling, and letting dick roll backwards and onto his feet again. another down, but dickâs on the ground now and thereâs still more of them than there are of him. less than ideal.  âanytime youâre ready!â
batricide:Â
He tsks. At least Grayson is aware of his shortcomings.
Thereâs a moment of hesitation. The barest hint of unease. This is a deviation from his path. This is not what he intended to do with his life, Damian had been told from birth that he would rule the world, a modern day Alexander the Great. Vulnerability is not something he does well, but -
But itâs not as if heâs ever been good at hiding that from his brother.
With Bruce - he seemed to see only the surface. His past, his mother, his raw edges. He saw Damian as a beast barely kept in check, fueled by rage too great to overcome. He didnât see what Dick did, he didnât see who he was. And neither of them had the words to bridge that gap. Bruce expected total compliance and Damian needed trust to give it.
And he trusts Dick enough to say the truth.
âI did not leave the League to be Robin,â he says after a moment, drawing a knee up to his chest and wrapping his arms around it. âI left to be my own person⌠The person you seem to believe I can be.â
A beat. He tightens his grip.
âIâll form my own identity. I donât need to be Robin to be that person.â
fair point.
damian has always been bigger than other peopleâs footsteps. at least, thatâs what dickâs always thought. robin was good for him ; it was discipline and scheduling without seeming like it. robin has always been whatever itâs wearer needed it to be. it was family for dick, and acceptance for jason, and a badge of merit for tim. but damianâs outgrown it - far quicker than the rest of them did. dick thinks that damianâs not meant for batman either, but he wonât ever say that. damian will take it the wrong way, he thinks, and dick hasnât found a way to phrase it where heâll take it the right way, so he keeps it to himself. but damian isnât batman - heâs better. heâs more.
and curled up like this, as dick tilts his head to look, damian seems much more like a kid than usual. it makes dickâs heart melt, like it always does.  âyou donât need me to believe in you. you can be whoever you want to be.â doesnât mean dick will stop believing in him, by any means. damianâs a good kid, he is. he just needs a chance. and if dickâs the only one thatâll give him that chance then fuck it - dick will be here to do that.
âwhatever you need, dames. weâll figure it out.â dick moves to push himself up from the couch to get plates, and then pauses. âalso, before i forget. weâre not having any more than four animals in this apartment at a time, and they have to be small enough that i wonât get evicted for them and that is not up for debate even a little.â dickâs asthma will go wild no matter how many pets there are, but heâs trying here. Â
that being said and out of the way, he does get up, goes to the kitchen to find plates.  âso, you wanna patrol tonight?â
âCould an injured person do this?â
this is...uh bad.  âyouâre not actually doing anything.â because heâs not actually mobile, though dick doesnât want to be the one to tell him that. and royâs on the easy stuff, so itâs probably the concussion thatâs fucking with him. which is fair enough, it was a pretty rough one.  âyou want some water?â dick is worried, but heâs not about to yell about it. // @trickarrowd
also lads let me tell you. in drink with me, after grantaireâs verse he and enjolras hugged Hard and my crying like Doubled it was wildÂ
a man: plays enjolras in any capacity me: he is the Most Handsome Man Alive and i love him

The Rescued
âCould an injured person do this?â
âIt seemed like a good idea at the time.â
âThis is a code orange emergency!â
âJustâŚdonât let go..â
âIâm too pretty to die!â
âI was so scared.â
âNever thought Iâd say this, but. Thanks.â
âPerfect timing.â
âOw! Be gentle.â
âWha..? Whatâs going on?â
âI didnât need your help.â
â[crying] Thank you so much.â
âDonât let them get away!â
âItâs not as bad as it looks.â
âI should have listened to you.â
The Rescuer
âWhy didnât you call me?!â
âGreat, now youâve dragged me into this.â
âListen to me. Just calm down, deep breaths.â
âWhat? I needed coffee first.â
âJust do me a favor and stay conscious.â
âIâm the good guy!â
âYou donât look so good. Tell me, what day is it?â
âI shouldâve left you to die.â
âBe quiet or Iâll throw you back in there.â
âItâs weird, but you look pretty good.â
âIâm sorry. This is all my fault.â
âHold on tight.â
âItâs not like Iâd let you DIE.â
âYou did good. Iâm proud of you.â
â[awkward] Itâs not a big deal.â
Iâve been kind of dead lately, so hereâs someâŚextremeâŚJason expressions. I was really smart and let a ton of work from my job build up on top of the freelancing I do on the side, so Iâve been playing catch up these past few days and my mood is just aLl oVeR tHe pLaCe. Gotta draw those feelings out. Though it is nice injecting emotion back into my work!
batricide:Â
âThis is a terrible idea and you know it,â Damian says plainly, crossing the room to take a seat on the arm of the couch. âI go if you so insist. Itâs pointless and a waste of time but I will go.â
There will be no shortage of schoolyard scraps and teachers calling home to express their frustration with a student that will argue with them about discrepancies in their texts. Damian is sure this is going to be more trouble than Dick thinks, and doubts heâll last more than a few weeks before the school pushes him through itâs curriculum to get him out of their hair.
âAre there any other stipulations I should know about?â
âterrible ideas are my speciality.â as if damian doesnât know that already. damian, who has just recently run away from home - quite literally - to come and live with his adopted big brother who just barely has his life together. so terrible ideas, it seems, run in the family. still, dickâs now weaselled an agreement out of damian, so itâs not all bad. at least not yet.
the next big question pertains to whether or not it should be a uniformed school. dickâs leaning more towards no ; he wants to see what damian considers normal attire for a ten-year-old.
âfor school? no. iâd try and enforce a patrol curfew for school nights, but given how often i broke the ones bruce tried to set for me, i donât think itâd work anyway.â he considers for a moment, then tilts his head.  âspeaking of patrol...i assume youâre not planning on giving that up, and you have given up robin so...â he lets the question hang, curious and open.  âwhat now?â
batricide:Â
âYou intend to send me to school to socialize me? Thatâs ridiculous, Richard. I,â he starts, and then very nearly says something he knows heâd regret. Iâll never fit in rests on the tip of his tongue before he swallows it down. âI am sociable enough as it is.â
Does he need to be reminded that he is not like other children his own age? Is this an attempt to have him better blend in with society â what do normal ten year olds do? Surely they donât speak several languages fluently and have no idea what itâs like to break a manâs neck without trying. They watch insipid cartoons and bemoan their crushes donât notice them.
Heâd already tried to fit in with people nearer to his own age than Alfred and Dick, and it had gone poorly. The Teen Titans should have been easy to associate with, and even if the mission had been a success, he was rather certain that theyâd all prefer never to be in the same room together again.
âAnd itâs hardly rent. Your apartment looks as though itâs already been robbed. If Iâm to stay here there should be some semblance of order.â
arguing with damian is, sometimes, like arguing with a brick wall. but an interesting fact about dick is that heâs just as stubborn, and hardly plans to go down without a fight.  âagain. not a negoti -â his words are warped as he yawns, stretching the syllables around them.  â- ation. besides, youâll go crazy alone here all day.â at least the manor has space. dickâs apartment is two bedrooms, one small living room and a bathroom. not exactly sprawling and ready for a ten-year-old whoâs not used to sitting still.
dick knows itâll be difficult. heâs already anticipating several notes and calls home from the principal of whatever school he can get damian into on such short notice. but he can deal with that ; and the best way for damian to learn is to do.  âthink of it like an undercover mission. go in, observe. learn how to blend. at least give it one semester, then weâll talk.â as much as dickâs joking, it really, really isnât up for debate. and he thinks itâs not that much to ask, either. especially since damian has just decided to live with him, out of the blue. or maybe it was a long time coming...thatâs actually more likely.
he nods thoughtfully at damianâs observation, eyebrows raised.  âwell being a cop doesnât pay quite as well as being the ceo of a multi-billion dollar company so youâll excuse the sparseness.â he really will have to get another bed though, the spare room is just boxes right now.  âclean, if you want to. it wonât get you out of school.â
