Late nights aren't a stranger to the group, and even less of a stranger to Legend, but this is getting ridiculous. Two weeks of you laying down to sleep at a reasonable time, well before second watch starts, but you are always awake until partway through third watch if you sleep at all.
Legend thinks he may be getting more sleep than you at this point, which is concerning by even his own admittedly skewed standards.
This has to stop.
You can't run like this long term. No one can - ask any of the heroes in the group because they have all tried he promises. He also promises that they all failed miserably and their body made sure the paid.
So, with the knowledge that something has to change, Legend sits himself by you as you try to convince your brain it should sleep.
For a while, he lets you try to sleep. He's silent as he sits - almost standing vigil as if he can scare away what ever is causing you issues sleeping.
You toss and turn, huffing every once in a while. You try to get comfortable- as if searching for the position that will allow you honest sleep but it is to no avail.
Watching the familiar routine - watching you struggle with getting sleep as he does is strange. He knows the others struggle, but they all struggle differently with different routines than he does.
Each moment feels heavier than he wants it to. He isn't sure how to help - this isn't the first night awake with you but it is the first night he is acknowledging the shared issues with sleep.
"Have you tried counting sheep?" Legend asks, finally breaking the silence before leaning back on his hands and watching the sky.
"If it was that easy I'd be unstoppable," You sigh, shifting again within your bedroll.
Legend snorts at your answer, unable to argue.
If it were that easy, no one would ever have any problems sleeping.
"What about those breathing exercises pretty boy swears by? Or the whole muscle tensing and relaxing?" He suggests, trying to help.
He doesn't usually suggest trying whatever Warriors thinks works but one thing he and the captain can agree on is that sleep is important to be functional and everyone needs a basic amount. They may disagree on that amount personally - but neither can contest that at least four hours are needed even if more is ideal... They both know how to run on less.
"Legend, I've tried everything. Okay? Everything. Warm milk, hot showers, cold showers, meditation, reading, counting sheep, exercise, and I even tried hanging upside down until I got dizzy. Can't you just leave it?" you huff at him.
Legend sighs, and as he looks at you he asks, "Why did you hang upside down?"
"It was too-early-A.M."
"Of course."
You open your eyes, staring at him with dark bags under them. "What are you trying to do here? You know better than most that if I could sleep I would."
"This has to change. You need sleep."
"I know that."
"I want to help."
"Can you shut my brain up then?" You ask, tone sharper than you intend.
Legend blinks, wondering how he missed this. Of course it's your mind being loud - he understands that. He understands that better than he wants to, when his insomnia isn't acting up his thoughts are.
He has an idea.
"Would you let me try?" Legend asks.
"I'd try just about anything," You sigh.
"Okay. Hang on."
He stands, crossing to his things before grabbing his bedroll and dragging it to lay beside you.
Legend arranges his bedroll so it's ready to lay down in later.
He settles himself back down afterwards, looking to you. "Okay, I'm back."
"I see that."
"Did I ever tell you how Ravio scammed a whole festival out of thousands of rupees?" Legend asks.
You snort, already pretty sure you know his plan. It probably won't work, but the fact he cares enough to try is nice. "No. How'd he do that?"
"With his stupid smug face!" Legend scoffs.
"Of course."
He nods. "Right, so, we're at the fall festival and he's running his usual stall and scams with Sheerow snatching anything shiny that's unattended. And then- this man starts pulling out little ribbon braids he swears are good luck charms from Lorule!"
"He didn't!"
"He did. He starts telling people that for a small fee per charm he can braid in any charms they want, and this is Castle town so they eat it all right up of course."
"Of course. They fell for that?"
"The things the brought him were interesting. Someone brought him a ring, someone else brought him a rock with a hole in it, someone else brought a flower. He just braids them in and charges ten ruppees per charm - or thirty for three," Legend snots disdainfully.
"That- isn't a discount?" you blink.
"You're telling me! But they all bring him multiples of three, thinking it gives them a discount right? And he makes bank. I come back from helping Irene and Granny Syrup set up their stalls and then helping the blacksmith and Ravio is out here getting everyone wallets!"
You stifle a yawn, "Sounds like him..."
Your eyes feel heavier, and when you blink it takes longer to open your eyes.
Legend watches, smirking. He continues his story until he reaches the end where Ravio manages to get invited back with the same 'good luck charms' at his stall next year.
After the first story your eyes stay shut, and he starts telling you about the time Zelda almost faked her own kidnapping. It was such a ridiculous idea, all she needed to do in the end was to tell people they had unrealistic expectations and that things take time. Thankfully that entire mess was avoided and it worked out okay.
The safety he gives off paired with the story gives your mind peace and something to hold onto.
The next story is about spending summers helping his uncle prepare for apple season, and it's more to make sure you stay asleep than anything. His voice is low - quiet enough only you can hear it.
This is the first night in a while that you aren't spending awake with him in displeasure and silence. He knows this won't always work, he knows there will be dozens more nights where you are up late because you can't sleep...
Reading the crossover stuff you've written for linked universe is rotting my head so much that it got me back into writing!!! (which is honestly a miracle I haven't written anything for myself in ages)
but like. I'm imagining a player's aid! insert who's also a big fan of Sky: Children of the Light (great game btw very fun with friends I recommend hehe)
and one day they just. find a random sky child????? In Hyrule??? so obviously since the sky child is all on their own where they really shouldn't be, mc just. adopts a kid. they can't really communicate well, if at all, except through very very exaggerated body language and gestures (emotes in the game is a common way to talk with strangers. or spam honking to get someone's attention. imagine the noise.) but eventually the player and the sky child become so close that they can just share looks or read each others body language and just know!
Wind has a new sibling now who is very happy to mess around and help play pranks on the others. The sky child wouldnt be afraid of Wolfie because they dont really have much reference for dangerous creatures except for the krill/dark dragons and Wolfie is too cute and small to scare them! Sky would probably really like them too because they can fly and they could be a really musically inclined sky child and be able to play different instruments! Like the harp in-game!! one of the links might find out about the child's arsonist related needs and be concerned, but the mc insists that the child is fine! Don't worry at all, Hyrule. They genuinely won't get any burns from standing directly on top of the campfire! they aren't a normal hylian child, they actually kinda need fire to stay alive and rain isn't good for them, it puts out their light. now I'm imagining angst with rain oh no-
the sky child (who would probably be a veteran who's been around a long time and was probably exploring out of bounds areas and somehow managed to get to Hyrule. whoops) is kinda confused but up for exploring this vast realm and find mc and they just. adopt this weird not-a-spirit-yet person who kind of has light too? so maybe a moth? (affectionate term for new players gicitdkgdigditdoyd)
and when the sky child first meets the chain, they are probably just freaking out over their clothes lol. cosmetics and basically dress up is a very big part of the game and the sky child would not be above begging to get their hands on their own really pretty blue scarf, black pelt, cool looking armour, etc etc.
So the sky child is super caring and protective over mc. they would probably bite legend at some point lmao. they can just sense the bad vibes from him! They don't really understand it, but legend doesn't like their moth, and obviously they won't stand for any slander so they bite :D (even if there could be a communication barrier because they can't speak the language, only HÖNK)
side note, I'm actually writing a crossover fic for linked universe and Sky:COTL. can you tell that i've been losing my mind over them??

You swallow thickly when the portal won't let you through, even as Legend holds your hand in a desperately grip.
"No," Legend says. "Why aren't you coming?"
"It won't let me," you say shakily.
"What? No! You said you'd we'd stay together!" He protests as he comes back through to your side.
"I said I'd do everything I could... Legend, we knew this was a possibility."
Legend just shakes as he swallows. "This isn't supposed to end like this!"
"We can't fight this one," you says as you squeeze his hand.
"I can't lose you!" Legend says weakly as he steps into your space.
He holds your hand still.
His free hand comes up to cupyour cheek. He rubs his thumb across your cheek softly.
"I don't like this anymore than you do," you say as you lean into his hand.
"I can't watch you leave," he says shakily.
You know then what you're going to do as a parting gift for him. It will hurt, and there will be no real comfort in it for you...
But it's for Legend.
"You go first then," you say softly. "You don't have to watch me go."
"I- I don't want to leave you!"
"I know, but if you draw it out, it doesn't change anything."
Legend just sighs and closes his eyes. "I don't think I'll ever get over you."
"Try anyway," you say as you turn to press a kiss to the palm cradling your face.
"How?"
"I want you to be happy, Link. If you find someone else who makes you happy, don't stay hung up on me," you smile sadly.
"You say that like you're easy to get over!" Legend says with wide, wet eyes. He lets go of your hand and moves to cup your cheeks with both hands. "Don't you understand that you're it for me? If I somehow manage to get close enough to anyone else to even start getting feelings for them , you're going to haunt me!"
You close your eyes against tears. "I'm not that special. You'll come to your senses one day, Link. You'll find someone to settle down with."
"Shut up! You are the most amazing person I know! I would fight anything just to keep you," Legend says shakily as his thumbs brush tears from your cheeks.
You swallow thickly, and move the borh of you so you can press your foreheads together. One hand cradles his face while the other rests on his shoulders.
There's a split second where you make a decision that you will find your way back to him no matter what. It's not going to be easy...
You have no idea how you'll get back to him in all honesty...
You will get back to him , hough.
"Do you trust me?" You ask with a shaky voice.
"Is that even a question? Of course I do," Legend breathes out.
"Then I need you to trust that I will find my way back to you. I promise."
"How?"
"I don't know, but I will."
"You cann't -
"You said you trust me."
"I trust you," he says weakly.
"Good. Then I need you to go home, I'll find my way back to you."
Legend makes a soft sound. "Really?"
"Really," you assure weakly.

Today marks two years since your return from the adventure with the heroes of Hyrule. It's not a particularly great day for you , but you have things to do.
The coffee is a miracle you are grateful for as you find yourself fiddling with the protective ring Legend never let you give back.
Today is more time working on time magic with your friends, but you can't say you have high hopes just now.
Even with all the research and trials , you haven't managed anything too promising yet.
Zelda comes into your home with a call of your name.
She brings Impa, Link, Beedle, and Perry the postman.
Sure, Link is your baby cousin that could all but be your brother for the way your parents raised him, but he's sweet.
Perry is pretty serious about his appointment as the royal postman.
Beedle is a sweetheart, and honestly, he's got some good ideas.
Zelda is just a God friend who's willing to lend her magic.
"If we could figure out how to get a magic anchor to the era, we could pull it off," Zelda sighs as she looks through the many, many, many notes.
"I don't know, we tried the ring," Perry sighs as he motions to you.
"It's not like the royal family keeps heirlooms laced with the magic of their princesses," you snort.
"Well..." Zelda trails off.
"Are you serious?" Link asks
"I can't say we'll find one to Legendary era... but I think we can get back to at least Wild's, and then the other magical ties would he easier to find..." Zelda muses.
"Wait - really?" You ask immediately.
"We can try!" Zelda smiles. "Give me a few days!c
Two weeks and after several visits to other eras, you finally have a full network to travel to all the boy's eras. Though you've only been to see Wild, Warriors, and Hyrule so far, you can visit the others later.
Now, though? Now you can go see Legend.
Your friends send you off with supplies and hugs, and we'll wishes. You step through the gold and white portal.
You emerge outside Legend's house.
You're here!
You knock on the door and giggle at Ravio when he starts asking questions.

Legend trudges through his front door with a limp and an excitement to sleep for the next year.
The house seems to be in the usual condition, so at least Ravio hasn't done anymore crazy.
There's laughter as he closes the door.
"Oh- Mr. Hero is back!" Ravio calls.
Oh.
There's someone else here, then?
Legend groans as he drops his gear by the door.
"Legend?" A voice asks.
He knows that voice.
And only so many people call him that.
Legend looks up to you, and he nearly sobs at the sight.
You stand in front of his sofa, looking at him with wide, hopeful eyes.
He has to be seeing things.
He... dosen’t think he cares.
You look even more awe-inspiring than he remembers. Your appearance is better than he remembers seeing.
The way you stare at him with those eyes of yours? He could swear he is dead. He adores your eyes. They are forever going to be seared into his mind.
He dosen’t have to remember now, though. Not because you're here.
"Link?" You call again, softer. Your voice is just as decadent as ever.
Legend surges forward without a thought. His knee aches from where he hurt it earlier, but that dosen’t matter.
Nothing matters except for you.
He just has to get to you.
He has to hold you and be sure you're real.
Legend pulls you into a hug, sinking into your warmth with a soft, desperate call of your name.
You wrap your arms around his tightly as if you too worry about this being fake. You whisper his name as if it's an honest prayer. It makes him feel even weaker.
"You're here," Legend says as he clings to you.
"I told you I'd find a way," you say wetly.
He pulls back just to stare into your eyes with a deep reverence, one he can't even find it in himself to be ashamed of. "Please tell me this isn't temporary. If you leave again, I can't - I can't."
"Hey, hey, I'm here. It's not temporary. I have so much to tell you. We can even visit the others -"
"What?"
"My Zelda found some magic, and we can go visit the others. I'll have to let her explain more later."
"But this is real? You're not disappearing again?"
"This is real."
Legend laughs as he pulls you in to press a sweet, soft kiss to your lips. His hands cup your face reverently as he soaks in your warmth.
You wrap your arms around his shoulders as you kiss him back.
He could die happy right now if he didn't have the rest of his life with you to live out.
Was just scrolling through and read the ask about showing the Chain modern music and I thought of a scenario
Because like with my specific music taste, it's varied, but also I listen to a lot of songs with a waltz rhythm or just tye general vibes that would have you swaying or slowdancing with a partner
And I'm just imaging. Like. Reader showing somebody in the Chain the music that they listen to and just offhandedly mentioning "Oh this song is waltz rhythm. Man I wish I could learn that-" AND ONE OF THE LINKS WHO KNOW HOW TO DANCE OFFERING TO TEACH READER HOW TO WALTZ
But like. Imagine reader saying this to Legend and him mentioning it so shyly later when they have a moment to themselves and quietly offering to teach them. Like cmon Legend literally dances in some of his games you can't tell me he doesn't know how to do some sort of dance with a partner that could match the vibes of those sappy love songs you showed him earlier.
Or maybe Warriors, who would have surely had to attend fancy events and definitely had to learn some sort of ballroom dancing. He didn't really enjoy doing it with strangers, but it's actually nice with reader surprise surprise

You are absolutely onto something and I have a whole Playlist for songs to slowdance in the kitchen to.
Legend would be so so sweet with it. He CAN dance, he jumped only does it when.he has a reason. Dancing with you? That's it's own reason. He'd be so patient with you as you learn.
Warriors also know how to dance but while he teaches you it's lighthearted. He laughs with you. He finds it's so much more fun when he does it with you because he knows you, he trusts you, and he's maybe looking for excuses to see your smile.
I think Sky can waltz but only the basics. He isn't the best but he can teach you and then you can practice together! You'll get into the advanced moves with him and laugh together.
Hyrule dosen’t know most hylian dances, but he'd teach you the fae equivalent of a sweet slow dance!

So like. Yeah, time paradox or smth because reader meets them as a child. Each Link already knows them as their guide who helped them during their adventures who clearly sounded like an adult.
I dont entirely know how the Chain would actually recognise reader as their guide but younger actually... throwing a wrench in my genius machinations dammit

Wild and Zane absolutely trade cooking and baking tips and recipes. They enjoy hearing about ingredients from other worlds and talk about cooking for a group with different tastes. They're writing down and exchanging recipients cards ypur honor. Gorden Ramsey fears them.
I see Zane and Time, but I raise you: Pixal and Time. Pixal and Time are both simultaneously Gremlins and exhausted by wrangling their friends. Pixal and Time just sit their watching the chaos and trade stories about similar situations.
Four and Kai! Blacksmith bros! But also they'd bond over their shared 'my siblings are chaos magnets and I want a nap' stories. They definitely info dump about weaponsmithing together.
Kai and Wars - both self proclaimed women's men who actually have bad track records with women. Pretty boys with crazy fans and while I don't remember Kai having a fan as obsessed as Cia, Kai did have two younger siblings in the spotlight and was probably the one handling most of the social media presence and creepy fans unfortunately don't stop being creepy... Also they are both recovering from alcoholism (headcanon tbf on Wars' part)
Twilight took one look at Lloyd , and adopted him as a baby brother. That's not a grown man that's a baby (/silly. I know full well Lloyd isn't a baby anymore but he IS a baby brother). Wolfie is a free weighted blanket and loves scratches.
Nya, Wild, Legend, and Wind all get on like a house on fire. Lloyd tags along as little siblings do. This group is ingenuitive, had to prove themselves over and over, and should not ever be left unsupervised for more than five minutes.
Cole and Sky get along fairly well. They love a good soup, they enjoy quieter bonding time sometimes, and they both probably meditate. They probably share different pumpkin recipes.
Actually Zane and Sky too. They love birds and they love researching birds and Zane would be DELIGHTED by loftwings.
Hyrule and Jay my babies. They're trade tips for hair care and are actually the same character in different fonts. Silly, sassy, flight part of fight or flight when possible? Love em
Wind and Kai. I'd man they just do. Big siblings who's little sibling was suddenly older than they should be?? You know
