I've seen that you're excited for the new Lotr series! I have never seen the movies nor read the books, but I'm interested. Where do you recommend I get started?

Oh my. 

I’d say... LOTR itself, the book. The movies are very good, but if you’re not scared of the 1200 pages the book is -as usual- much better. It’s a long ride, but imo totally worth it.

Although I’d suggest skipping the prologue altogether since it’s not the start of the story but a fake historical record on the history and habits of hobbits and... not the most thrilling read I think ^^’.

Alternatively, if you’re not completely sure/the style isn’t the best, I’d check out the first movie and see if story and characters manage to catch your interest. If they do, move to the book and then come back to the movies, so you don’t get spoiled!

After LOTR, if you like it, I guess it’s just a matter of what you find more interesting/up your alley. You’ll have something like a 36000 years long fictional chronology to choose from :D  

The Hobbit is more of a fairytale-like story and is somehow of a prequel to Lotr, all the other books’ genre (and there’s a ton of them) is -more or less- old epic and historical chronicles. 

On top of that, LOTR and Hobbits aside, consider that all the other books we have were compiled by Tolkien’s son based on his dad unpublished/in fieri works and notes so you may have a footnote going “here the text wasn’t clear but on 23/10/19xx I found a note saying xx and it worked so I put it here” or “Dad wrote 4 different version of this story, this is n°X of them bc of *reason*, look into *insert other work* for the others” and the likes. 

Sometimes the stuff gets uh, really complicated ^^    

The Silmarillion is usually cited in the “trinity” of the main/more famous works and out of them is the only one made like this. Starts as a Genesis book (verbatim: “In the beginning was Eru, the One [...]”), continues as a collection of the stories of characters who lived in the 36.000 years before the events of LOTR (to contextualize a little, the upcoming Amazon series should play in the span of 6000 to 3000  years before Lotr happens). 

If you decide to tackle the Sil and happen to find some stories you like more than others and wants to explore, in some cases there could be a entire novel dedicated to them, like the love story of the half angel lady who waltzed into the Big Bad lair, trolled him, stole his stuff and waltzed out with her human bf after she rescued him :D 

Hopefully I managed to be of use and didn’t scared you off the universe ^^
