it took me so long to realize that viper has mad potential as a producer, the beat was wavy as fuck.
the green screen clip choice is also peak. He is playing Pikmin? he's just like me fr
We're only six days into 2024 and already:
A founding member of Mr. Bungle has been arrested for murdering his girlfriend, and
Viper has been arrested for keeping a woman captive in his house for five years
This is shaping up to be a bad year for the Zany Music™ crowd.
I need to find a third to complete them
You’ll Cowards Don’t Even Smoke Crack
It is a reality that many of us will complete our lives wholly unrecognized by the world. Our thoughts and dreams, our accomplishments, which pizza toppings we preferred, all steadily dissolved generation by generation until nothing remains but radio waves and depleted ozone. Some however are immune to the cruel march of time, immortalized, forever coursing through the collective pulse of humanity. Some have achieved this through political infamy, others through technological breakthroughs, but it is the great artists of world that possess the powers of depiction, the flawless articulation of our fundamentally flawed selves. Along our timeline exist sheer masterpieces of art, ignited over and over due to their ability to touch on universal truths of the human experience.
"Stains upon the silence," as Beckett would put it.
You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack depicts Viper with a glazed stare into the camera. His left eye, uncooperative, shifts away as he tries to maintain focus. A mild upturn at the corner of his mouth indicates a wry smile, but staring too long invites a haunting "Mona Lisa Effect" in which one will be unsure whether or not Viper is smiling or not. Perhaps the most recognizable element of the cover is the egregious misspelling of "y'all," an error (or is it?) that has baffled thousands since the album's release in 2008.
On the surface, it may seem that the cover represents Viper's frustration at those who are unwilling to fully participate in the lifestyle they lay claim to. However, in an interview with Noisy in 2013, Viper explained that he "made the song just to tell people not to be judgmental in life especially when dealing with drugs or being judgmental to drug dealers." The "cowards," then, are straightedge folk that cast judgment on those involved in illicit activity. This is an interesting insight; it may illustrate a defensive posture amongst those too scared to examine street living, or perhaps it implies Viper's desire for people to stay open-minded about things they'd rather scold than understand. Like with all great works, the interpretations are boundless.
It would be redundant and admittedly too difficult for me to articulate why this cover and album is so significant, and further analyzation would necessitate a much larger venue, so I’ll start to wrap up.
Many will surely be trying to decode Viper's most successful release for a very long time. It is in this process of discovering meaning that we ultimately discover ourselves. Viper has provided us all with the means to access our own individual process of change and growth. We are granted an opportunity each day to achieve something greater: to foster compassion, to provide insight, to mean something among Beckett's silence that we will likely not stain. You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack is what helps us remember that.
