The first international competition for the Viper was as a modified Chrysler Viper RT-10 fielded by Gilles Gaignault in the 1994 24 Heures du Mans. Before losing half their gears due to a mechanical issue, driver Justin Bell managed over 320KPH (200 MPH) on the Mulsanne straight.

In 1994, Gilles Gaignault added some hard tops to a pair of Chrysler Viper RT-10’s and entered them into the 24 Heures du Mans. At the time, these ’Rent-a-Car’ sponsored racers were barely suitable for competition let alone the international stage. Yet their 770HP 8.0L V-10s (cut to ~550HP for Le Mans) coupled with what driver Justin Bell called “fantastic handling” exhibited a spirited nature that would prove nearly indomitable in GT racing through the late 1990s.
