Grandma Candy!
being chronically online sucks because I have a friend who constantly tries to crack jokes or make comparisons that they stole from twitter/tumblr and when people laugh I have to sit there like ??? I’ve seen that post. You didn’t come up with that.
When fake content goes viral, the damage has already been done, even if the post is debunked.
Whoa.
I saw the reddit post rbed here and while one thing seemed a little off (the poster saying they were posting drunk on impulse at a public library computer -- not the fact that someone would be drunk at a public library computer, but the fact that the post was long and carefully composed, which is not a typical characteristic of a drunk post) -- but it seemed believable! And it also did to the journalist quoted here:
Those claims were, unfortunately, believable — DoorDash actually was sued for stealing tips from drivers, resulting in a $16.75 million settlement. But in this case, the poster had made up his story. People lie on the internet all the time. But it’s not so common for such posts to hit the front page of Reddit, garner over 87,000 upvotes, and get crossposted to other platforms like X, where it got another 208,000 likes and 36.8 million impressions. Casey Newton, the journalist behind Platformer, wrote that he contacted the Reddit poster, who then contacted him on Signal. The Redditor shared what looked like a photo of his UberEats employee badge, as well as an 18-page “internal document” outlining the company’s use of AI to determine the “desperation score” of individual drivers. But as Newton tried to verify that the whistleblower’s account was legitimate, he realized that he was being baited into an AI hoax. “For most of my career up until this point, the document shared with me by the whistleblower would have seemed highly credible in large part because it would have taken so long to put together,” Newton wrote. “Who would take the time to put together a detailed, 18-page technical document about market dynamics just to troll a reporter? Who would go to the trouble of creating a fake badge?” ........ Generative AI models often fail to detect if an image or video is synthetic, making it challenging to determine if content is real. In this case, Newton was able to use Google’s Gemini to confirm that the image was made with the AI tool, thanks to Google’s SynthID watermark, which can withstand cropping, compression, filtering, and other attempts to alter an image.
Anyone have that post that's like "mean girl cliques in movies are so funny, they'll be like "we, the lipstick club declare you an ugly skank that should kill herself""

as a history geek I see so many viral joke posts that get on my nerves like popular songs you hate but hear everywhere
and as with those songs, I try so hard not to say anything because, come on, it’s just a joke, it’s not that deep
I know it’s not that deep
but okay YES the Salem accusers who said they saw X person at the devil’s sacrament were supposed to have been there too; that’s the POINT. they came forward and confessed that they had been made to Sign The Devil’s Book(TM) and then got asked, “who made you do that? who else was also there?” and were like “Goody Generally-Unpopular, Goody Never-Paid-My-Mom-For-That-Last-Dozen-Eggs, and One Man Because I’m Feeling Ambitious Today.”
at which point they got lots of pity for having been so narrowly delivered from the clutches of the Evil One, and those they accused either named others or were hanged. generally speaking
there was no pretense, if the accusations involved the accuser having transgressed themselves. everyone knew that, to accuse someone of having been at a Satanic sabbath, you must have been there yourself. they weren’t stupid
“bitch what were YOU doing at the devil’s sacrament lolololol.” being forced to Do A Witchcraft by evil witches threatening to kill their families, allegedly. they thought of that very logical question and were prepared for it. try to keep up
(and anyway more of the accusations were about witches tormenting the accusers invisibly than having seen anyone at any kind of diabolical gathering)
A Guide to Being Kinder on Tumblr
I want to start this by noting that tumblr, being a social media site, is optimized for maximum engagement, rather than, say, NOT being a tool that encourages harassment and dog-piling. This is a post encouraging the users to be more conscientious than the site is designed for. And if you’ve mucked up in the past and unwittingly been part of a dog-pile or something, yeah, so has everyone. Again, the site is designed for that. This post isn’t to make anyone beat themselves up, it’s just to help us all be better.
