“I used to try and prove myself to the naysayers, the critics, to the people who said that Off-White wasn’t valid, but then I realized that those people are powerless when it comes to the community I’m speaking to,” said Virgil Abloh. “Now I focus on the legacy I’ll leave behind.”

“It sounds so backwards to say, but you have to break a lot of disciplines in order to create a new version of a discipline,” said Shayne Oliver in conversation with Virgil Abloh for AnOther Magazine in 2021. 

Shayne visited to SOCIAL SCULPTURE in Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” to share the impact that Abloh’s collaborative spirit made on his work and the projects they took on together.

This week, Serena Williams will take to the court right here in New York City for her final U.S. Open before retirement.

A six-time winner of the U.S. Open, Williams collaborated with Virgil Abloh to create this outfit for her appearance in the 2018 tournament. The result is a skirted bodysuit that expresses her bold playing style and transgressive fashion sensibility. A sporty, asymmetric top flows into an airy tulle tutu, a departure from the game’s usual simple, all-white dresses and pleated skirts. 

Beyond their interest in fashion, Williams and Abloh shared the experience of excelling to the highest ranks of predominantly white enterprises. Best of luck, Serena!

Virgil Abloh took nothing for granted in his approach to design. This attitude is encapsulated in his motto "question everything," which can be read on the nylon banner that hangs from the ceiling above the exhibition.

Abloh said, “When I studied engineering at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, it was the humanities classes that I had put to the side that ultimately started me on this path of thinking about creativity in a much more cultural context—not designing for design’s sake, but connecting design to the rhythm of what’s happening in the world.”
