Virginia Lakes in the Hoover Wilderness.

Located a little less than an hour north of Mammoth Lakes, the Virginia Lakes in the Hoover Wilderness is a gorgeous place (especially in the fall when the colors begin to pop) to spend time losing ones self in the beauty of the great outdoors.

Once again, an extensive network of trails makes this location one to hit if you are a hiker/backpacker and are looking to get out and about in the wilderness. The Lakes are on he smaller side, but are beautiful none the less, and are good for fishing, or just lounging lakeside. I believe I've seen a kayaker out on one at one point, but I'm unsure of any potential regulations regarding that activity.

Camping is also popular in this area, but I'm fairly sure you need to get permits first. If you plan to camp here, double check to see if open fire pits are permitted, or if you are only allowed a cook stove.

I have never camped here, only day hiked, but it's a sublime slice of wilderness and I look forward to a return visit sooner rather than later.

One of my favorite places to be during the fall is high up at Virginia Lakes in a float tube.  Elevation 10,000 feet.  Lots of fall color.  The first dusting of snow.  Sunny and cold.
