Day 18 of #100daysofpractice: I did practice other things but today I did something I've been meaning to do for a while: learn the piccolo sooo in Virginia Company from Pocahontas. This song holds such a special place in my heart and I really hate how this little solo gets no love, especially because it is completely lost under dialogue in the movie! The Tobacco Monopoly of King James VI and I

On June 29, 1620, James VI and I issued a royal ban restricting the growing of tobacco in Britain. The crown granted the Virginia Company an exclusive monopoly on tobacco production and trade, allowing the company to control the valuable crop imported from its American colonies.

In return for this privilege, the Virginia Company agreed to pay the crown a tax of one shilling per pound of tobacco. The policy reflected the growing importance of tobacco as a colonial commodity and showed how the English monarchy used trade regulations and taxation to increase royal revenue.

The decision also strengthened the economic ties between England and Virginia, where tobacco cultivation had become the foundation of the colony’s economy.
