Summary- A women, Scarlett Clare, is running away from her past and the danger that she is connected to. She wasn’t planning on coming across the town of Knockemstiff nor meeting the Sheriff and getting on his radar.
1 Hour.
I woke up on the floor. The backdoor wide open and a pounding in my head. I held onto the table to get myself onto my feet. I look around to silence and dishes that need to be dried. I look where my body once was. A frying pan on the ground, I furrow my brows and rub the back of my head.
I turned and spotted the picture of us on the wall. Anger bubbled in my body as I remember what happened. I grew hot and my vision was red.
I cleaned any sign of struggle and evidence that can be used. I cleaned myself up like nothing had even happened.
1 week.
“Ma’am have you seen this woman?” I held up a picture of her, “No sir” she continued walking her dog. I smiled politely but cursing under my breathe as she was out of hearing distance.
I went back and started doing some digging looking for any clues as to where she could have gone.
Papers through papers and nothing! “Fuck” I screamed as I threw a stack of mail off the table. I chugged some of my beer and glanced at the pile on the floor. A yellow envelope caught my eye as I bent down to snatch it up.
“Dearest Clare..” My eyes scanned the inside of the card.
My eyes lit up as I knew what the fuck I was going to do next.
1 month.
One month of searching for her. I only had one lead and it was that she took a bus somewhere north of Virginia. It couldn’t have been that far away, since that bus ranged route was only a few states away. I would be at the police station in my office most nights. Eventually, I printed out signs with her photo on it and faxed it to other stations in surrounding states.
“Carter, heading out to Ohio in the morning. Care to tag along?” My chief spoke as I mumbled a ‘no’ and continued searching through county population data for any tip.
By the next morning, her picture would be up around towns and I’d find her again.
3 months.
I had received a tip, someone had spotted a girl that looked similar at bus stop. She had rode the same bus as them but they weren’t sure when or where she got off at. I had requested a route transcript be printed and I knew where I was going for the next couple of days.
October 28th 8:16am
I walked through the small town of Knockemstiff, Ohio. My eyes scanned the vicinity and the people walking around. I stepped into a small shop and went up to a man behind a counter. “Have you seen this girl? recognize her even?” I spoke and the man took a look at the picture and locked eyes with me. “No sir, everyone knows everyone in this town” He said, I clenched my fist, hidden by the counter. “Thank you” I mumbled and stepped back out into the gloomy day.
I glanced to my side for a quick second and my eyes felt like they deceived me. I blinked rapidly and then the woman was gone. I went in the direction I thought I saw a woman in black jeans and a tan coat. I rounded the corner and found nothing but a dumpster and some carboard boxes.

“Sheriff, yea, I think he’s in town” A ruff voice spoke into the landline, looking out the window of the small shop.
