Virtual Audio cables are so confusing

Recording different audio sources individually

Since I feel this needs to be documented because, like me, there will undoubtedly be someone else trying to figure out how to do this.

Let’s say that like me you need to record a group of people chattering on TeamSpeak, your own commentary, and a game, without any of the three overlapping. That is to say the TeamSpeak audio has only the audio from TeamSpeak, your commentary has only your own voice, and the game audio has only the game audio.

This is a very advantageous situation over combining two or more tracks, because it means you can adjust the volume of each so that they don’t clash, as well as edit parts out etc. without getting rogue clips from other contexts.

First, get yourself Virtual Audio Cable. It’s relatively cheap but there’s also a trial version you can tinker around with if you’re not sure it’s worth the investment just yet.

Next, open the Control Panel application of VAC and add a couple cables.

Go into the settings of your group chat client and set the playback output to one of the audio cables, let’s say Line 2. This should mean that you no longer hear anything from the client.

To resolve that, open up the Audio Repeater application included with VAC, setting the input to Line 2 and the output to your speakers. Once you hit Start, you should hear the chat again.

Here’s where it gets a bit trickier.

Go into your system sound devices, which in Windows you can get to by right-clicking the sound icon on the bottom right of your monitor. Find Line 1 in the Playback devices and set it as the default device. Also, go into Recording and set Line 1 as the default microphone as well.

Once again, you’ll find your system has gone completely silent. Open up Audio Repeater and set the input to Line 1 just like we did with the chat client. Hitting Start should resume your system sounds. Note: using the Windows built-in Sound Recorder will now only record the system sounds, since those are now the default microphone.

Now, if you record the game, make sure it’s not recording the system audio, set it instead to record Line 1. You can use programs like Audacity to record the chat client (many also have a built-in recording feature you can use), and most webcams let you pick a microphone to record. The end result is that you have 3 clean audio tracks to tinker with in your editing.

Does anyone know a way to stream game sound and voiceovers from a headset on Windows 8? Virtual Audio Cable keeps giving me an error code that it can't register and all Stereo Mix tutorials are running on Windows 7.
