When You Can't Sleep at Night by Of Mice and Men | Road Trip AU

Sometimes Sehun wants to shoot Kyungsoo in the head and make the trip to the beach by himself, but then the younger of the two will look up at him with those stupid, teary eyes and trembling lips—and Sehun will sigh, roll his eyes, and set the car back in gear, pressing his foot the gas pedal as he directs the vehicle back onto the road.

Kyungsoo cries every second of the day, but that’s probably because he keeps sticking his head out the window to feel the wind against his face as they travel at 120 kph down the highway. He never seems to learn that it’s the cool air rushing towards him that’s making him cry all the time, but Sehun is pretty sure that he’d keep crying even if he just sat still in his seat. Sometimes, when they park at the side of the road for the night, Kyungsoo asks the older boy if he will tell him a story, and Sehun will always grunt in reply and turn to rest on his side, facing away from the younger boy. Kyungsoo doesn’t complain.

(When Kyungsoo cries at night, he thinks Sehun can’t hear him, but he can. He can.)

That night, when they lay by a modest fire and Kyungsoo asks Sehun to tell him a story, he does. He tells him about a world where highways are always full of strings and strings of cars and people go out for coffee with their friends. He tells him of a lost land where people travel to new worlds with aeroplanes and families sit around the table for dinner together. Before he can tell Kyungsoo about how the people of this faraway world would gather in the thousands to watch twenty-four people kick a ball around a field, Sehun realises that the boy has already fallen asleep, with that stupid smile on his face.

That night, Sehun pulls the revolver out of the only backpack they’ve been carrying around this whole time and presses the barrel to the younger boy’s head. Thankfully, the constant rush of waves is enough to drown out the piercing bang when Sehun fires the gun, and it serves as his only company when he goes to sleep, blood on his hands and across his face.

It’s good that Kyungsoo died smiling. It’s good that he’s still smiling. He deserved that much, Sehun decides, because at least he stopped crying for once.
