Visca Limax is a Mellanoid Slime who was a veteran of the space program. By the early 25th century, the Mellanoid Space Program was finally beginning to peter out after several successful and several near-disastrous low-tech missions, and public support to integrate the space program into Federation Starfleet had finally begun to creep up. Visca quit the space program and enlisted in starfleet and transed her gender.

Born in 2365 on Mellanus, Visca came of age in a society in flux after contact with the Federation. Visca started working for the Mellanoid Space Program in 2382 (at first as an intern), supporting exploration of the Mellanus system for the next couple decades. But between Visca's growing identity crisis, the Mellanoid government reducing support for the MSP, a desire to see the wider galaxy, and increasing contact with Federationers, there seemed to be little future in the Space Program itself. An incident involving a Starfleet ship rescuing Visca's rescue shuttle wound up being the last straw for the veteran spacer.
In Starfleet, Visca's thrived. Far from home, and as just another spacer among many (some of whom understood her better than she'd understood herself), she finally allowed herself to explore her identity, to be herself. Her first assignment, USS Jemison, was an aging, overcrowded, outdated workhorse when she joined, but she still enjoyed it -- she liked being on a ship quietly helping people, rather than being sent out on dramatic, dangerous missions. Unfortunately for her, she was a bit too good at her job, and especially a bit too good at staying calm under pressure when things didn't go as planned. When Jemison went into reserve in 2415, Visca was reassigned to USS Hypatia, a Sovereign-class ship with a troubled, chaotic reputation, which itself is being assigned a five-year-long grand exploratory mission.
