The original Chora church, now a museum, was built in the early 5th century, and stood outside of the 4th century walls of Constantine the Great. Eight centuries later, after an earthquake possibly, the church was rebuilt by a powerful Byzantine statesman. The frescos and mosaics in the interior were carried out between 1315 and 1321. They were covered in plaster by the Ottomans when the church was converted into a mosque in the 16th century. The building was still undergoing restoration when I went and it began in 1948.
