ARTIST’S PORTRAIT

Venice Biennial 2011 A work by Maddalena Fragnito and Emanuele Braga Do you want to be a star? Do you love to retreat into solitude? Do you share risks and investment within a group? Are you engaged in some form of organization or fight? Do you still believe in the soundness of institutions and academies?

We wondered what could be the cardinal points that serve as reference in the construction of an artistic career nowadays. We refer to a framework proposed by Pascal Gielen in The Murmuring of the Artistic Multitude. Around the orthogonal axes we drew a circle filled with exemplary phrases. We invite artists to highlight the statements in which they identify. Filling out the diagram, the result is a splash of color that corresponds to a mark, a fingerprint, a placement of each artist.
