Emma was so small and vulnerable that doctors had to fight to save her life. Tragically, being born too soon is the biggest cause of newborn death in the UK. And premature birth is not just a fight for life. Many children will grow up experiencing life-long disabilities including cerebral palsy, learning difficulties and hearing loss. Inge’s story: “My beautiful daughter Emma was delivered by emergency caesarean 12 weeks early weighing just 1lb 13oz. Everything happened so quickly, it was terrifying, but our nightmare had only just begun. Emma was so small and poorly that doctors had to fight to stabilise her. She needed two blood transfusions and oxygen and was fed by tube. And the risk of infection was on my mind constantly. We tried our best to celebrate Emma’s birth and not let the anxiety and fear that we may lose her take over, but it was so hard. Thankfully Emma is a fighter, and after 3 months in hospital the day finally came to take her home. It was such a relief, but the anxiety was still there. With every sound she made I wondered if she was still breathing. I’m still dealing with the pain and trauma of her birth. I try to look at the positives, but the post traumatic stress disorder I’ve suffered as a result has affected my memory of Emma’s early months.” We’d like to thank Inge for sharing her story.
