Action goes purple for #worldprematurityday 💜⁣ ⁣ The team at Action HQ have been helping to fundraise and raise awareness for World Prematurity Day on 17 November, by entering some amazingly yummy cakes 🍰 in a purple bake-off and by wearing some fantastic purple outfits!!! ⁣ ⁣ In the UK, more than 61,000 babies are born prematurely each year, and sadly over 1,000 babies will lose their lives after being #borntoosoon. Globally, it is the biggest killer of children under five.⁣ ⁣ We know through medical research we can stop the devastation caused by premature birth. "Elijah led a very traumatic little life. He died sleeping on my chest in the small hours – that’s when I joined the fight to stop premature birth." Today marks the start of baby loss awareness week. Born exactly a month ago today at just 24 weeks, we’d like to thank Keisha, for bravely sharing the story her beautiful son, Amaziah, who sadly was born too soon. “Amaziah was born on 9 September 2018 at just 24 weeks and 5 days. We weren’t expecting him to arrive until Christmas day. He weighed in at just 1lb 8oz. The doctors told us that Amaziah wasn’t going to make it through the night but he did. Over the course of the next week, Amaziah developed brain bleeds on both sides of his brain and was reliant on oxygen. He had infections and was given antibiotics to help fight them off; his sugar was also high which they had given him insulin for. On the 7th day, Amaziah developed a perforated bowel, unfortunately with all the other issues that was going on with his little body, the stress was all too much for him and he sadly passed away in my arms on September 16 2018”. Over 1,000 babies die each year in the UK due to premature birth, making premature birth the biggest killer of babies in the UK. Sarah’s story: “My daughter was born at 26 weeks she weighed just under 2lb. It was a hard time we had a lot of down days at the beginning we had lots of support from family she was in special care for 3 months then it was time to bring her home still tiny 5lb 4oz. I felt scared I had what if she stops breathing in my head but they told us before we left the hospital. She is now 11 years and we have no health problems.” Through medical research we can STOP the devastation caused by premature birth. Inge’s story: “My beautiful daughter Emma was delivered by emergency caesarean 12 weeks early weighing just 1lb 13oz. Everything happened so quickly, it was terrifying, but our nightmare had only just begun. Emma was so small and poorly that doctors had to fight to stabilise her. She needed two blood transfusions and oxygen and was fed by tube. And the risk of infection was on my mind constantly. We tried our best to celebrate Emma’s birth and not let the anxiety and fear that we may lose her take over, but it was so hard. Thankfully Emma is a fighter, and after 3 months in hospital the day finally came to take her home. It was such a relief, but the anxiety was still there. With every sound she made I wondered if she was still breathing. I’m still dealing with the pain and trauma of her birth. I try to look at the positives, but the post traumatic stress disorder I’ve suffered as a result has affected my memory of Emma’s early months.” We’d like to thank Inge for sharing her story.
