Day 10: Unchosen

Genre: high fantasy

What first piqued my interest: Any twist on the Chosen One trope can definitely sit next to me at the lunch table! Honestly, any twist on any prominent trope gets my attention, and this one is no exception.

What I want to learn more about: What killed Estel, and why did Maris decide to take her place? How are Maris and co. going to keep Estel’s death a secret? Can they even hope to save the world if Estel was the one who was destined to do it? Also, on less of a Big Theme level, I’d love to know more about how Maris uses her Sight to wreak thievish havoc.

What I’m excited about: The idea of a somewhat reluctant hero trying to save the world knowing that even if she manages it, she can never take credit, is 👍😍.

omg verv, i love you!! but now where to start :thinking:

• okay confession time first. they came about at the same time the new star wars trilogy was coming out and the same time i was watching Good Omens, so basically I was like oh look what would happen if we smooshed aziraphale and poe dameron together. #noregrets

• *slaps Salvador’s shoulder* this bad boy can fit so much anxiety in them

• the decision to make them enby was basically:

me: wow, you think angels can choose what they look like when they’re not being flaming wheels? also me: tbh if i was a flaming wheel i simply wouldn’t Vibe™ with gender

• their official pronouns are he/they, because they just know humans be like “you look like a man, therefore you are.” and they’re fine with that most of the time, but they will not hesitate to correct any human who assumes angels automatically identify with whatever their meat sack looks like

• angels: ew gender (in the same tone as “ew cooties”)

• also Salvador is definitely the reluctant hero/protagonist. they didn’t want to be part of this quest, but also they need adventure and to give their life purpose. and also they somehow adopted 3 kids and oh no, now they’re invested

• salvador: gets invested in humanity and develops Feelings™ for them salvador: meets some humans who need help salvador: gets invested in these humans salvador: *surprised pikachu*

for the wip title game – 'The Wrong Side of Night'?

The Wrong Side of Night

Lucie has grown up believing all Daylighters were good and all Nightlighters were bad. But when she finds one such Nightlighters badly hurt on school grounds, she can’t do anything but help him. She never thought it would bring the Dawn Forces to her doorstep.

Duff has grown up in the night but yearns to live in the day. After his parents were executed for daylight trespassing, the resistance found him and took him in. They taught him all Daylighters are bad. But how bad can the girl who saved his life really be?

When the resistance hijacks a night-time prison convoy, Duff never expected to find his Daylighter girl among the prisoners. Her crime? Helping him.

When the resistance frees her and Lucie finds herself face to face with the boy who got her in all this trouble, she wants nothing more than to return to the light-filled world she has left behind. But the more Duff tells her, the more she learns about the world, the more convinced she is these Nightlighters only fight for what is right.

And she might just be able to give them the edge they need to turn the tides.

AHHHHH hi Verv bb 😘

okAYY SO my brain wants me to tell y'all about The Catch™ that is the good doctor of WtBR, Richard Taylor, who manifested literally fully formed like freaking Athena and sprung from my head.

Basically, he originally did not exist. In the previous version of WtBR where Oliva was Olivia and was unmarried, Richard neither had a role nor was he even a character. HOWEVER, the moment I realized that I needed to change the setting and rocket everyone into Ye Olden Victorian Age, he popped up with a doffing of his hat and a "good morning."

And, really, what a man he is.

He's older than Oliva by a few years, about 12, and the reasoning behind that is very simple: I like writing age gaps that are healthy and mutually attractive to both parties being written, because they do happen. They do exist. And in a world where Oliva, and many of my ladies, would he considered spinsters because they are Independent and Unmarried, having her find someone to love was almost seen as...impossible. Which is definitely dumb bc imo you can find love at ANY (reasonable) age so having Rich pop up was a fun little surprise.

Originally, he was just Jimason's [prev. Jackson] boss. He was Matthew Knott's very good friend, a mutual connection between him and Joanna and Joanna's former husband [whom I am very excited to discuss soon!! The relationship with them two is intriguing], but there was no connecting factor for my Alice Fan character.

And in came Rich, Rich and his charming little grin and his British-ness and his respect and fascination for all of the things Oliva knows (even if he might not understand or agree). He IS set in his ways and they DO have disagreements, esp. about Fàn, but he became the missing piece, my little connecting character.

He is important to the narrative and a number of characters as a whole, and I have come to love him a lot. And, also, like...look at him y'all. He's adorable.

And those cheekbones tho

So, yes. Here yah go. Rambling and selflessly plugging my adorable doctor character. Can't wait for y'all to met him & come on his and Oliva's journey together.

for the wip title game - 'On Darkest Wing'?

Thank you for this! Here is my 5 minute idea where I used a name generator for the names. I also can’t summarise to save a life. Enjoy. 

On Darkest Wing

She walks along the clifftop with bare feet touching the cool earth. The sound of the boo-ing crowd behind her has faded now. She only hears the sound of her heart beating, her raspy breath, and the wind blowing against her. She tells herself that in front of her is only a fall that never ends. . . unless she ends it.

Nerethe has never had a chance at becoming anything for her family. She always thought that she would grow old with her parents, watching them as they succumbed to time like all the rest. It was not the dull life she wished for. She believed that she was destined for something much greater. Something unforgettable. 

Since she could wish upon the moon, she wished that she would have the courage to fly with the Others. But, to prove herself, she would need to spread her wings -- the unnatural wings that had always been hidden in order for her family to continue to be accepted in society.

It isn’t until Nerethe accidentally stumbles across Zelphe, another young girl with unfamiliar wings. Together they learn that all this time, there has been a world for them outside their home of Ocylis. And, all they need to do is open their wings and fly there -- or so they think.
