guide for the hug prompts (vivijeb maybe?)

Vivian was never very quiet when it came to her emotions. For someone who has an excellent death glare and could send shivers down your spine from across the room without speaking a word, the octoling was ironically very messy when it came to the complex tangle that was her emotional state. Nobody knew this fact better than Jebediah, especially now, as she sat in a comfortable burrito of blankets on their shared couch, silently staring blankly at the floor.

Woken up from another nightmare of her past, she now sat with her groggy partner on the couch in their living room, waiting for the night to wash itself away. The inkling had been woken by his fretful friend about an hour earlier, shortly after she’d been sent into another frenzy over the echoes of a past she desperately wanted to sometimes forget. Now, he patiently sat with her as she struggled to calm herself down, a gentle hand massaging her back as he muttered reassurances when he could. He would’ve had her locked in a hug, too, but Vivian had her boundaries, even around those as close to her as Jeb was. So, now he’s left to wait, wait for the octoling’s mind to ease, and wait for her voice to find itself again after the tight sobs it had just choked out mere moments ago.

When he felt his companion shuffle under his hand, Jeb turned to make sure she was alright. Her cheeks were still red and puffy and stained with tears, the occasional sniffle still seeping from the heavy green blanket she had currently draped herself with. Other than that, however, she seemed to have calmed down for the most part, her face now quiet in comparison to the chaos of minutes prior.

“You okay?” Jeb tentatively asked.

“Yeah,” the octoling sighed. “Yeah, I’m okay now.”

The room went quiet again, and Jeb squeezed her shoulder. “Anything I can get you?”

Vivian laughed grimly. “A hug, maybe.”

Despite her jesting tone, the inkling still gave her a genuine stare. He knew her well enough by now to know when her jokes were actually jokes and when they were sugar-coated pleas. She knew this too, but was often a bit stubborn to admit it. Tonight, however, didn’t appear to be one of those nights, as within the moment she was already leaning towards him. Jeb reached out to her in reply, his opposite hand taking the back of her head and guiding her to his chest. With a soft “c’mere,” he had his partner curled in his arms, his hands wrapped around her in a protective bubble that said I’ve got you. I’ll protect you.

“Thanks,” She sniffled, her voice muffled by his t-shirt.

“Always,” he replied.

It’s funny because I literally have no idea what the hell is going on between them either
