This parody represents the thoughts that we the consumers think go through the heads of these celebrities. I love that Miley Cyrus says that her and Nicki Minaj must stick together in this black community. And how Taylor thinks she is being so generous bringing Minaj on stage when she wins the award for best video of the year. Minaj's embrace of the stereotypical black woman attitude shows how society continues to portray African American women. And Swift's changing of the word black goes to show how so many entitled women are uncomfortable saying the word black to describe an African American person due to its perceived negative connotation. The video then goes into colorism and how Raven-Symoné Christina Pearman says she is not black. She is from Louisiana. It took me the second time watching the video to see the colorism in this parody. I saw the racism and sexism happening in the video, but I still struggle to see colorism because it is not brought up nearly as much as racism and sexism. Also, the video broaches a subject we have previously discussed about how upbringing and experiences forms people’s opinions and even when someone is African American when they assimilate to white culture and grow up in the limelight their views reflect white patriarchal norms.
Simone says let's not make this about race and we are all American but, it always about race because as much as we all want to see past it we just are not there yet. Taylor Swift is so privileged she thinks she can help Minaj win an award and afford her a private jet to the VMAs. Minaj reminds Taylor Swift that just because she is black does not mean she is poor. Often in our society we assume people's skin color reflects their socioeconomic status. Beyoncé has broken that barrier, but unfortunately no longer has the time to help in the race war. This video shows how adding people of minority to the top tier of the patriarchy does not mean you have dismantled the patriarchy. It shows how America has preoccupied Beyoncé with awards and now she does not have the time to fight for the causes she believes in. This video touches on many of the problems we have discussed in class and how celebrities feed into these societal norms through their actions and comments which further perpetuates the cycle of racism, colorism, and sexism.
