Deploy a HWv7 RHEL5.6 VM from a template
Replace NICs with VMXNET3
Update vmtools
Shutdown and update VM hardware to v8
Expect for the network to work
Apparently VMware would like you to update the hardware FIRST, and THEN the vmtools. Save yourself a headache (plus about 30 minutes) and just do it in the correct order.
