Symbolism & Aversion
• Death of Mother: His mother, Leonora, was a Romani dancer known for her beauty and talent. She died at the age of 24, giving birth to him
• Death of Father: When Vanitas was 9 years old, the troupe was massacred in the night, during an attack by vicious vampires. He had to watch his father bleed out in front of him after Arnaud shielded his little son
Upbringing Conditions
• His family: He was born into a travelling troupe, largely made up of Romani people, outcasts, and vagabonds, who formed a close-knit community (or family). Every one of them embraced Vanitas as one of their own and even fondly remarked how much he resembled his mother
• Collective grief: Despite the tragedy surrounding his birth, the troupe never blamed him and instead made efforts to support and raise him
• Paternal trauma: His father, Arnaud, was a former doctor, who abandoned his previous life to follow Leonora after the two fell in love. He chose love and freedom over social expectations. Arnaud deeply cared for his son but was often emotionally distant and preoccupied with grief after Leonora's death
• Vanitas's trauma: The detachment he felt led the boy to grow up believing his father hated him. Arnaud's care was silent and practical, lacking warmth, which the child misinterpreted as rejection
• Maternal trauma: Leonora, had she survived, would have showered the little boy with love and warmth, something Vanitas ultimately never got to experience
• Consequence: In his attempt to feel useful and not burdensome in his existence, young Vanitas taught himself to cook, clean, and manage tasks beyond his age
• Massacre Aftermath: A group of Chasseurs, the vampire hunters of the Catholic Church, found him and took him into custody of the Church, where he was trained from ages 10-13 to become a Chasseur himself
• Dr. Moreau: At the rough age of 13, Vanitas's feath was faked by an odd researcher formerly employed by the Church. Moreau's goal was to create vampires artificially, gain control over the the grimoires of the Blue Moon, anf eventually become a vampire himself. Vanitas, from then on, became his test subject No. 69
• Brothers: After one year in captivity, Vanitas met Misha, otherwise referred to as No. 71, who was also kidnapped by Moreau. The little boy had previously been taken into custody of the Church, after his mother, who had worked in a brothel, died due to 'mysterious circumstances'
• The Laboratory: Misha and Vanitas were repeatesly cut open, injected, and subjected to other kinds of procedures, including being injected with the blood of the Vampire of the Blue Moon. The final process of an attempt at linking them to the two grimoires Dr. Moreau had acquired, was brutal and nearly killed the children
• Freedom: Both were eventually rescued by the Vampire of The Blue Moon, who destroyed the lab and ultimately took both children with them
• Found Family: Vanitas, Misha, and Luna lived together for a time, in a small refuge in the woods. Misha was immediately on board, while Vanitas needed time to accept this new situation and come to terms with the fact that he had a new chance at coming home

• A pair of knives whose hilts are rigged with wires are his signature weapons. In addition, stored in some pockets on his belt are various "cheaters' implements" which he uses both in and out of battle

• Reading & Literature: Vanitas is well-read and enjoys literature. No matter if it's medical, alchemical, philosophical, or (though rarely) evwn fiction
• Alchemy & Science: He has a deep-rooted interest in alchemy and science, both due to his past and current goals
• Sketching & Anatomical Drawings: His father had many anatomical sketches, hand-made, inside his medical textbooks. Often, when Vanitas adds an entry, he also adds a sketch
• The Piano: He was taught by his father, who was once an avid piano player, before his time on the road. He'll never play in front of anyone, but the muscle memory remains
Integration into Paris
• That One Incident: Luna, the Vampire of the Blue Moon, who had rescued Vanitas and Misha from the hands of Dr. Moreau, a mad and rogue scientiest, eventually became a curse-bearer of their own curse, having their true name stolen by an unknown culprit
• Welcome to Paris: Believing Misha to be dead and seeing no way to save Luna, Vanitas killed them to end their suffering. It was a traumatic act that scarred him permanently. So, at the age of 16, Vanitas fled back to Paris, carrying one of the Blue Moon grimoires and barely any money
• Persona Non Grata: The boy adopted the alias "Vanitas", both to hide and redefine himself. His birth name, Léon, the name inspired by Leonora, and loved to bits by Arnaud
• On Friendships: In Paris, now free to do as he liked, he met Dante, also aged 18, who became his first and mostly only friend. Dante, to this day, remains one of the few people Vanitas tolerates (barely)
