Voice-acting so bad that I became angry, and I'm rarely angry.
I've got a butt-load of games on GOG.com that I haven't played, yet. I figured I'd give them a shot with my new computer. Things are running really smoothly on it, which is great.
I started playing one called AquaNox that I got as part of a bundle a while back. It's kinda like a flight simulator but underwater. The game itself operates pretty smoothly, but the intro for the game was painful, to say the least. In the nearly 20 minutes of backstory (yeah, 20 minutes before I even get to play the game), I heard maybe 10 characters speak, and all of them are terrible...just terrible. Not only can none of the "performers" act their way out of a paper bag, the voices that some of them put on as their "characters" are some of the worst I've ever heard in my entire life. Seriously bad. So bad, in fact, that I became angry every time I heard a new one. I'm not talking disappointed. I mean blood-boilingly angry. If it weren't late at night, and if I didn't have sleeping roommates, I would have been shouting at my computer.
I almost never get that angry. It is incredibly rare, but hearing these horrendous voices was like a personal insult to my training and craft. I have worked for years to hone my voice to do what I do. Not only that, but I quite literally know 100 actors (actual actors, not Joe Schmo off the street) who could have come in and done a better job for the same price.
They made a sequel to this game, which was also included in this bundle. I'm going to turn in on and see if the acting is on the same level as the first game. Whatever money I spent on the first game was completely wasted. Despite its gameplay being fair, the quality of the voice "acting" was so poor that I can never play it again without going into a fit of rage. It is unlike my normal character to do so, and I will not subject myself to a situation that would cause the buried worst of me to surface.
