VOIDY do you have any tips for drawing sam??? i draw him a shit ton but i’m always unhappy with his design, no matter what i change up. would love some tips from a fellow artist of samson 🙏🌞
Oh my gosh if only I knew 😭 my only process is ALSO drawing him a metric frickton (over 1000 times since January, because I draw a stardew comic) and then figuring out what to keep and what to toss. He has changed so many times. I’ll outline my thought process and maybe it helps!
A good way to do it is determining what you’re looking for.
I KNEW I wouldn’t try to copy his portrait hair 1:1, but wanted to keep the rest relatively close to canon. I also wanted to include genetic traits from both his parents. But also add some punk accessories, because I really like his dialogues at the Luau and with Lewis. And since I’m writing a story, I also set an age, which is 26-27.
From his portrait and parents I interpret the following traits:
Slight widows peak / long-ish straight nose (I add a slight upturn from Jodi) / visible cheekbones (Kent) / deep eye sockets / prominent jaw / mischievous smile / almond eyes / dark brows (I draw them really thick for funsies) / curly hair (from his sprite)
I make his eye color a muted grayish green. Vincent has his purple eyes from Jodi, and Kent’s black eyes are on the green spectrum so I thought it fits!
As for body type: there are some dialogues in the game hinting that he has strong arms and shoulders. And this is also supported by the way he walks, it’s slightly slouched over but still pretty broad. But apart from his janitor job at JojaMart I don’t see him work out. Given his fav foods he probably has some tummy (oh buddy that change in metabolism will haunt you soon).
Everything else is just preference.
I hc that he freckles in summer. I give him piercings reminiscent of punks I grew up around. I think sharp canines look good on him. And I’m ignoring the height chart that makes him the fourth tallest bachelor, I set him as second tallest at 1,90m (without hair) just because I think it looks funny next to my 1,66m farmer (also, again: slouched posture).
