Phaeton (before they were called Phaeton) lived in the ruins and wilderness as a semi-lone survivor, sometimes joining up with other human survivors. They avoided the techfolk out of suspicion. (In my setting, techfolk did exist in human society before the war, but Phaeton never had much exposure to them.)

Phaeton kept encountering the same set of techfolk (mostly cams) and eventually decided they weren't a threat, and approached them.
