Transforming The Music Industry Via Blockchain
The music industry needs a shake, otherwise, artists are going to starve to death. It is no secret that music making is generating hilarious income. I mean, it’s not the 1980s anymore and having thousands of listeners means close to nothing. YouTube and other video platforms undoubtedly help independent artists reach the masses but from a financial point of view, this is insignificant. In order to harder make a living artists have to generate millions of views, and this is easier said than done. Spotify doesn’t offer anything better at all – one hundred streams generate just a fraction of a cent. Sure, you get exposure but you never profit from it. Imogen Heap famously said, “99 percent of music is now generated by people who are independent. We do have massive, massive, huge, famous superstars, but they’re like a 0.1 percent.” The question is how all these independent musicians can get their fair share of their royalties. Perhaps blockchain technologies offer a solution for those who didn’t get the chance to sign fat contracts with the largest labels.
So what are the alternatives?
Ujo Music Built on the top of Ethereum, allows artists to share their music with the world, without the need of middlemen. A great part of the streaming and sales profits usually goes to cover the costs of publishers, middlemen and label contractors. Ujo ultimately bypasses these drags and uses digital currencies and smart contracts to pay artists whenever someone accesses their songs. Heap has been Ujo advocate since 2015 and has been active on the platform ever since. Currently, Ujo is in beta, meaning you can give it a try. Voise Voise gives artists the chance to distribute their works across the platform, while customers can stream and save their favorite songs. The aim is to help musicians find their audience and share their music with it. Voise claims it pays artists 100% of the royalties they earn. You can check the roadmap here. Lbry What separates LBRY from the other two platforms is its focus on digital content in general, not music only. The team behind it has the belief that it will “ultimately grow to be a catalog of every piece of digital content available.” The code is open for everyone to review and build unique dApps. The platform makes it extremely easy for fans to support their favorite artists but directly sending tokens to them. We are looking forward with excitement to the moment when artists get paid what they deserve. Hopefully, these three platforms can disrupt the ad-based model defined by Google and Facebook.
