3pm update for May 14, 2018.
tl;dr - media, please be clear the disaster is not the entire Big Island or all of Hawaii, because the economic impact of massive tourist cancellations is not something they need right now. They got the federal declaration of disaster which means they will now get federal monies and assistance.
Fissure 17, lava is moving 100 yards per hour (pretty fast for lava), downhill. The concern is if it cuts off Hwy 137, it’s a little over a mile from that. Fissures 18 and 19 are weakly active. Do not go to Facebook for info, it is full of wild and random statements. Check with Civil Defense and local authorities.
At the volcano summit, the lava lake is still dropping and the national park is closed, with many concerns around steam-driven explosions as the lava levels continue to drop.
PGV - they are killing all wells, filling the pipes to cap the geothermal resource then they will plug them and attempt to “maintain kill” on all wells. The officials are too busy dealing with these steps to comment on reporters disaster scenario questions.
Saturday, May 12th, a 16th fissure has opened only about a mile from Puna Geothermal Venture.
All tourists and visitors at resorts and AirBnBs in the effected area and surrounding areas have been ordered to evacuate ahead of potential eruptions or steam explosions.
Earthquake and Volcano Update & where to get info
There are some excellent tools and sites available to us for monitoring earth movement. One of the best is the 3D globe, free downloadable software, available here: http://cnet.co/dMr9qH (shown in this video) This video also recommends following a YouTube site called Astrotometry, available here: http://bit.ly/fv9lXr . As you'll see in this video, USGS doesn't report the quakes occurring in Europe. That info is available here: http://bit.ly/cpNUmU
