Arching lava fountain at Mauna Ulu ▲ Kilauea, Hawaii (March 1, 1974)
Here's 10 pictures of maybe the coolest thing I've ever seen in person. After a lot of dumb luck, a lot of sitting around, and a lot of staring at the HVO webpages about it, I caught an episode of fountaining in the ongoing Halema‘uma‘u eruption of (at?) Kilauea. USGS estimates a height of ~365m/~1200' at its highest point in this episode.
And yet, I have definitely waited longer for single eruptions of geysers. The atmosphere was really similar though: chaos, excitement, someone cried, hundreds of people showed up out of nowhere like 5 minutes in, and in that moment, without a doubt, there was no where else on earth I would have rather been.
Did you guys know you can watch a livestream of Kilauea from multiple angles and that when the sun rises over the crater while there’s lava flow it’s one of the most beautiful things in the world
@todaysbird This was taken during Kilauea's recent eruption on Nov 9th. The white dots flying around are White Tailed Tropic Birds, they nest on steep cliffs.

Kilauea volcano spewing lava more than 800 feet into the air in its latest eruption on Hawaii's Big Island.
[1st May 2025] Madame Pele putting on a show again tonight.
Captured from livestream just before midnight HST.
Kilauea's been erupting from vents up in the summit crater every few days since December; this is episode 19 anticipated by the daily Hawai'i Volcanoes Obsevatory bulletin quoted in the automated text scroll at the bottom of the webcam.
